I'm not a morning person, so my morning routine is very different from my night routine. I wish I was a morning person. My ambition in life is to retrain myself. When I wake up in the morning, I drink lemon and water and try to stay healthy.
I always cleanse my face in the morning. I don't wear makeup, though, so I may not need to. I feel so depressed when I wake up in the morning and my under eyes are puffy. So I keep a lot of things in my fridge, like under-eye pads and eye serums with cold applicators.
I always use at least a moisturizer and SPF. I always use the essence as well. I push the essence in, then apply the moisturizer, and when that settles, I apply the SPF. I don't wear much makeup in the morning unless I'm going to lunch with the Queen. I'll probably just apply a little blush and tinted lip gloss to look healthy.
When I work the red carpet for big celebrities, people always say to me, "Oh my God, it's midnight and you still have makeup on. How did you do that? I really only need a small amount of product to get the maximum effect. I think the same can be said for masks. Put on a very thin layer of makeup and blend it in well.
And I love to blur my lips because I like a little [melted] look. When I use lip color, I tend to blend a small amount onto my lips to kind of stain it. A lot of people who follow me send me pictures of themselves wearing Lisa Eldridge's Velvet Lipstick. They show me that there is no trace of the mask. [My new lip oil is] almost like a lip treatment, but it's quite pigmented, so it's a gloss with a blend of butters and oils.
Silk pillowcases and eye masks. Before I knew it, I had trained myself to sleep with a silk eye mask. Why did I do this? I like something really nice, gorgeous, cushiony, with lavender in it.
I make ice cubes with green tea. If I make a really strong green tea, I put it in ice cubes and put them in the freezer. On days when I'm swollen, meaning I've had a traumatic night for whatever reason, or I went to bed late, or I didn't wash my face properly, I put the green tea ice cubes on my eyes and massage them around my eyes, and it works like a genius. It's like putting pure iced caffeine with antioxidants on your face. It's the cheapest way to go, but the best.
I was definitely the first professional makeup artist doing a lot of top quality work who decided to jump into YouTube, and I was watching YouTube and thought, "This is genius." Many people in high positions in the makeup and fashion industry were critical of YouTube. They said it was amateurish and funny. But I was hooked. Then I decided to start making my own videos.
I was so scared that it would ruin my career. But it didn't have a bad effect on my career. And with YouTube, I learned a lot about what people were struggling with and what they wanted to learn. All of that has helped me a lot in the decisions I'm making now.
When I was an assistant to makeup artist Mary Greenwell, she told everyone this story. I didn't take care of my family in order to have a career, I traveled incessantly, I didn't settle down, I didn't take care of my personal life, and I regret that. I was constantly thinking about it, prioritizing (career and family) on equal footing, and making sure that I was not swept away by incessant travel and a very transient lifestyle.
I have always valued my evening routine. Cleansing is like meditation for me. I'm getting rid of everything I want to get rid of: dirt in my pores, bad energy, etc. I massage my face while cleansing and it feels so good. In fact, my mother used to sit and watch TV and massage her face all the time. She's so beautiful now, so I think it obviously worked.
The eyebrow serum and eyelash serum are kept next to her bed. The last thing I do every night is massage my feet. I don't know why, but I have this habit. It relaxes me, and when I wake up in the morning, my feet are soft and feel really good. So I use a very thick balm, but it doesn't smell very nice.
