Netflix's The Haunting... Is There a Season 3?
Just in time for the spooky season, Netflix has released The Haunting of Bly Manor (opens in new tab), the highly anticipated sequel to 2018's The Haunting of Hill House distributed. In the style of anthology series like "American Horror Story" before it, the new installment of the "Haunting" collection features the same cast (opens in new tab) as the first season, but in different roles. And just as "Hill House" is based on the classic horror novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson (1959), "Bryn Manor" also draws inspiration from another deeply disturbing work of fiction (open in new tab): Henry James's 1898 novel "The Screw The Turning."
Although streaming has only been available for a few hours, there has been a steady stream of rave reviews for "The Curse of Bly Manor" from fans and critics alike, and true horror junkies are already eagerly awaiting the next season of this series. While an official renewal for a third season has yet to be confirmed, here is what we know so far about the possibility of a new "Haunting" anthology.
After the first season, "The Haunting of Hill House," scared viewers around the world in October 2018, the series was renewed as an anthology in February 2019 Production on "The Haunting of Bly Manor" began in September of that year and will finished in February, allowing plenty of time for an October release date. Thus, barring any COVID-related delays, it would be reasonable to expect a third season renewal within a few months and new episodes to be available on Netflix in October 2022.
The trip from Hill House to Bly Manor features several of the show's stars. Recurring cast members from the first two seasons include Carla Gugino, Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, and Katherine Parker.
And the cast and crew are just as excited as we are about the possibility of a third season: Tahira Sharif, who plays Rebecca Jessell in The Haunting of Bly Manor, has been working with creator Mike Flanagan and executive producer She said she is "100%" willing to appear on the show for another season, thanks in part to Trevor Macy's ability to produce the show. She told Digital Spy (open in new tab), "Mike and Trevor and anyone who works with the whole team would definitely want to come back. Mike has an incredible mind for writing and directing, and he's very funny."
James Kunist, cinematographer for the show's second season, echoed Sharif's enthusiasm, telling Digital Spy, "I think there will be another installment. I think the audience really wants it, especially after 'Bry. It's a really fun concept. He added, "It must be fun for Mike, as a creator and writer, to dig into the historical literature and find a really interesting story."
The options are truly endless, especially since literary history is full of scary stories set in spooky houses, and it appears that the show's creators intend to stick to their tried and true formula of creating a "literary remix" in a haunted house.
"The 'Haunting' series is fundamentally about haunted spaces and haunted people," Flanagan, the show's creator, told Vanity Fair (open in new tab)." The way we make them dance together is really going to be uniformly Hill House and Bly." So it seems safe to assume, at least through the show's third season, that haunted spaces and haunted people will also "dance together."
