24 Hours with Jennifer Garner
Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?
Jennifer Garner (open in new tab) is a woman who needs no introduction. Whether she's acting in a great movie, inspiring her followers to go out and vote, or silencing Instagram haters, you can count on one thing: she handles everything that comes her way with class and humor. Below, the mother of three children walks us through a 24-hour walk through her world and shares tried-and-true beauty hacks that we can all learn from.
We all get up much later than we did before the shutdown. I don't think I get up until 6 or 6:15 AM. The first thing I do is stretch my legs. I don't know, maybe I'm getting older. While I'm in bed, I do some basic physical therapy. Then, before I have time to think about it, I get up, get dressed, and work out.
I drink coffee and then work out. I've been doing Limit fitness (open in new tab) pretty faithfully lately. That's how I start every day. Then I take a shower. Wash my face and immediately apply SPF. I've had a smoothie every day for years. I didn't know that making a smoothie could make me feel full enough to get through the morning, but it can. Kelly LeBeck (open in new tab) taught me how to make smoothies. That was many years ago.
I've done a lot of press at home. I'm not a hair and makeup person, and I've done my own hair and makeup a million times in my life. So I use a little concealer under my eyes around my nose and blend it in. Then I really love Stila's Peony Blush (opens in new tab). I use it all the time. For mascara, I use Neutrogena's Healthy Lengths Mascara (opens in new tab). And for concealer I use Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick (opens in new tab). It blends really nicely. I'm not a big fan of traditional self-care. I work out, shower, and have coffee in the morning.
NPR. otherwise I honestly only listen to country music.
Learned how to do my hair. This is probably the biggest thing that has happened to me in my life of isolation. My hair would be full during pregnancy, but when I finished breastfeeding, it would fall out in droves. After three iterations of this, my hair was much thinner than it had ever been. It is lifeless, heavy, and just sad. I really like Virtue's full shampoo (opens in new tab) and full conditioner (opens in new tab). This line has completely revitalized my hair. So I am very happy to share this good news. This is the first shampoo that has made my hair thicker, healthier, and overall happier. This is totally groundbreaking. I use Virtue 6-In-1 Styler. (opens in new tab) Then I blow dry with a diffuser, which I have never used before, and put Virtue Healing Oil (opens in new tab) on it. It smells so good. This is my hair style.
Annette Benning. It looks like me. Not too uptight, not too made-up, she is beautiful just as she is.
What I like about Neutrogena is that it is very affordable and you can buy it at any drugstore. Go to the drugstore and buy a bunch of new Neutrogena products and play around with the Retinol line. I'm not a fan of retinol products because I think they need a prescription or have to be super expensive. Neutrogena's Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Facial Oil (opens in a new tab) is great for nighttime use because it is moisturizing and non-drying.
As a kid, I wanted to be a children's librarian. Maybe I'll give it a try.
We are all night owls in my family. I can't do anything quiet during the day, like send a thoughtful email or respond to people. It's really hard for all of us. I don't know where every day is going. But at night, I put my last child to bed after 10:00. Because she's in high school and I have to stay up and make sure she finally finishes her homework and turns off the light. Sometimes she goes straight to bed, sometimes she catches up with me. I usually go to bed at 9:30 or 10. There is no excuse for me to go to bed with my makeup on. I always wash off my makeup, so I use Neutrogena makeup remover wipes (opens in new tab) first. Finish with Neutrogena's Retinol Oil and call it a night.
I am obsessed with the Calm app (opens in new tab) and love their sweet stories. Eric Blaa (opens in new tab) talks me to sleep at night over and over again.
