On repeat: my Rhude x Thierry Lasry "Rhodeo" frame
Whether it's a basic white T-shirt or an ultra-trendy jumpsuit, this bi-weekly series will feature items that our editors wear over and over again. Get yourself (and your credit card) ready for guilt-free shopping.
I've been wearing glasses since I was five years old, so when asked to write about one of my most-used fashion items for this series, my current pair of Rhude x Thierry Lasry "Rhodeo" frames seemed the most obvious choice. Some might say it's a little too obvious, but these particular frames are the ones I've cherished the most over the past few years; Rhude (open in new tab) is an overly cool Los Angeles-based casual menswear brand, and Thierry Lasry (open in new tab open in new tab) is a French designer with a name for his eyewear brand that boasts advanced silhouettes made of striking materials. Together, they have created frames that are perfect for New Yorkers who find themselves between these two very different fashion scenes.
An interesting fact about these frames is that they were actually designed and sold as sunglasses. Taking sunglasses to the optometrist for lens changes has been a habit of mine since my freshman year of college. I have found that sunglasses tend to offer larger, bolder shapes than typical eyeglass frames. And for me, with my wide face, that is the right choice for me. I've modified the lenses on my Ray-Ban Wayfarers, Celine oversized frames, and Maison Margiela sunglasses from an early collaboration with Mykita. (If you want to try this yourself, choose frames with flat lenses. If the lenses are curved, optical replacement will not be possible.)
When I wear these frames, I instantly feel like I am more hip than I actually am. It's like a superhero cape. And being able to see means you literally have superpowers! If you have to wear something every day, it's important to choose something that makes you feel that way. I've recently been getting into drag art (follow @dotdeville (opens in new tab)! I've also been dabbling in the art of shaving my eyebrows instead of using glue to block them every time I put on makeup. I especially love these frames because they hide my bold, but totally justifiable decision to shave my eyebrows. It's perfect.
