What I Wear on Repeat: Sarah Chloe's Gold Pearl Hoop Earrings
In this bi-weekly series, our editors will show you items that are versatile, chic, comfortable, and worn over and over again, whether it's a basic white T-shirt or an ultra-trendy jumpsuit. Get yourself (and your credit card) ready for guilt-free shopping.
I am not the type of person who is influenced by Instagram to buy things. I can't commit, and coupled with extreme skepticism, I've saved many items on my Instagram wish list, only to have them sit in my cart forever. So when I spotted super-chic stylist and former fashion director Elle Strauss wearing a new style of earrings (opens in new tab) on social media and went ahead with the purchase without hesitation or buyer's remorse, I knew something was up.
I can't explain exactly what overwhelmed me during that scrolling session, but Strauss, who designed the pearl hoop earrings for Sarah Chloe, described the pieces as "classic," "versatile," and perfect "from day to night." I can't argue with all fashion concepts! I wanted to be a day-to-night person. I didn't want to carry around secondary accessories, or change awkwardly in the office bathroom for after-work activities (remember those?).
Regardless of the circumstances that led to my purchase, I can say that these delicate yet durable earrings have changed my life forever. I am now officially a "day and night" person. And I love them. I love them.
Thanks to the removable pearl charms, these earrings are both a simple and timeless item, as well as an elegant and statement-making ornament. I once wore the gold-plated, unadorned hoops (opens in new tab) to the office with a patterned blazer, jeans, and loafers. At 6 p.m., I swapped the blazer for a leather jacket and added pearls for an ultra-feminine look. In a previous life, I had to bring a second pair of earrings to the office, but dropped one while changing earrings on the train, resulting in me attending happy hour wearing mismatched jewelry. True story. (Pro tip: Pretend to be a trend you see on influencers.)
Of course, if the pandemic has made you think that you only wear an outfit once a day, let alone need earrings that fit two outfits a day, I have found that this beauty strangely goes well with a mask. (The hoops are medium length, so they fit perfectly over any face covering.) Needless to say, these earrings add an instant pop to any situation where I just put them on to zoom around in my loungewear. I paired these earrings with a sweater for a casual coffee meeting (opens in new tab), an expensive jumpsuit for a night out, a summer dress for our Italian honeymoon (opens in new tab), and a jean jacket for brunch in the West Village. I also wore them when I met Hillary Clinton.
And thanks to their durability (they've never rusted or discolored) and versatility, I was able to rationalize the high price point ($196) - you can basically get two sets of earrings for the price of one.
To make a long story short, these are the Goldilocks of earrings. Not too big, not too small. Not too flashy, not too dull. Not too heavy, not too thin. Just right for any season, any outfit, any occasion. It's even chic enough to make those who don't believe in online shopping reconsider their ways. That's the magic of jewelry (opens in new tab).
