How to track your mail-in ballot and make sure your ballot has been counted
In the days following Election Day, or likely Election Week 2020 (opens in new tab), it will be more important than ever to check your vote status. In states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, Arizona, and Alaska, the margin between candidates is only 8,000 votes (opens in new tab).
If you live in one of these states, please click below to double-check where your ballot is located:
If your ballot is marked "rejected," is unsigned or uses a signature that does not match official records, has a witness signature or address that There could be several reasons for this, including missing, not placing the ballot in the secret envelope when required, or accidentally marking the ballot as lost. To resolve this, you will need to call or visit the county elections office.
As of this writing, over 48.6 million people (open in new tab) have requested and sent in absentee ballots (open in new tab) for the 2020 election. This record number comes in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, with many voters opting to vote at home this year instead of going to the polls. If you are looking for a way to track absentee ballots, this is the site for you.
As for mail-in ballots, one can't help but be concerned, especially this year. Misinformation about mail-in ballots is being spread by election officials (open in new tab). And as of October 27, the U.S. Postal Service warned that absentee voters may not receive their ballots on time if they did not turn them in on that day (opens in new tab). So for those who, like me, vote by mail, now may seem like the right time to panic.
But before you do, remember that we live in the 21st century and online tracking of mail-in ballots is now available. Unfortunately, it is not available in all states. Check to see if your state is trackable, and if so, find the right place to track your ballot. Here's to civic duty!
