Gwyneth Paltrow knows how not to stress.
Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?
If anyone understands self-care, it's Gwyneth Paltrow, the 48-year-old Oscar-winning actress-turned-wellness icon, who has the world's most influential (and sometimes controversial) health experts on speed dial, She vetted feel-good products and built her Goop empire. Does she have something to ease our stress? No doubt, "relieving the anxiety that manifests itself in our skin". (She partnered with Merz Aesthetics to develop Xeomin, an injectable anti-wrinkle treatment.) Zooming in, we asked Paltrow to tell us about one aspect of her balanced life.
I used to get up at 6:30 every morning, make breakfast and drink coffee like it was fired out of a cannon. But I think one of the beautiful silver linings of these turbulent times is that I haven't set my alarm in months. So [now], I usually wake up between 7:30 and 8:00.
I recently resumed my morning celery juice. The medical community has been saying about celery juice, "It's bullshit. It's celery. One of the doctors I work with, Alejandro Junger (open in new tab), told me that he was drinking celery juice and thought there was something special about it. So I drink a lot of celery juice and then do Transcendental Meditation (opens in new tab) for 20 minutes. Then I have a cup of coffee and catch up on emails and stuff. [Lately I've been trying out a serum from the GoopGenes series. Then, after my workout, I shower, use the Malachite from G.Tox foam cleanser, which smells amazing (opens in new tab), put on the GoopGenes moisturizer (opens in new tab), and go.
I'm on the East Coast, so my office in Los Angeles opens at noon or 1pm, so I can work out at 10am here. I work out with a bottle or sometimes two of Goop Glow (opens in new tab) in my water bottle. I'll do a class with Tracy Anderson (open in new tab) or Taryn Toomey (open in new tab), or Core Power Yoga with weights, or a Yoga Sculpt class. If I can't work out in the morning, I walk for an hour and a half in the afternoon. Then I try to fast until lunch. Sometimes I have a smoothie and a clean lunch. Then I basically work all the way through dinner. For dinner, I eat something good.
I use Xeomin (opens in new tab), but it doesn't make much difference. It has helped to refresh me somewhat, and I've learned to tolerate seeing myself in the zoom all day a little better. I know I've told this story before, but when I turned 40 I had a sort of mid-life crisis and went through a major anti-wrinkle program. One eye was in the opposite direction, one eyebrow was higher than the other, and my face was frozen. Fortunately, I wasn't shooting anything, I was just wearing big sunglasses. So I hadn't done anything for years, but my friend Julius Few, a plastic surgeon, suggested I try (Xeomin): "It's a proprietary purification of botulinum toxin, it's clean, you'll love it. He told me.
I take a bath every night. I love that ritual. I love the wonderful smelling salts. I light candles (open in a new tub) and sometimes listen to music. I love Martini Bath Soak (opens in new tab) and G.Nite Soak (opens in new tab). Then I put on Microderm (opens in new tab), take a bath, let it sit, then scrub my face in the bath and moisturize again. In the bath I often listen to girl singers like Kacey Musgraves. I also love Taylor Swift's new album. It's very singer/songwriter-y and mellow.
I know it sounds nerdy, but I try to be in bed by 9:00. My kids are in their room by then, and they're relaxed. But they're 14 and 16 now, so they don't need me to tuck them in. So I go to bed, usually watch a murder show on Netflix or something, and then go to bed. For some reason I watch a lot of Spanish murder shows. And I think they keep offering me all these Spanish murder shows because I watched one show and liked it. So I'm addicted to Spanish murder shows.
