Serena: The Series" Part 2: Everything We Know
The first season of "Selena: The Series" arrived on Netflix on December 4, but avid viewers will already have noticed that these first nine episodes do not tell the entire story of Selena Quintanilla's life. In fact, most of the series so far has revolved around the late Tejano Singer's upbringing, family life, and the Quintanilla family's role in the Selena y los dinos family band, and just as both Selena's solo and romantic life were picking up steam, a sort of big cliffhanger (if there can be a cliffhanger in a true story, that is) and it's over.
There is no "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom," no secret elopement with bandmate Chris Perez, no recounting of his tragic death at age 23 (open in new tab). It is clear that a second season of the show is absolutely necessary, but "Selena: The Series" was always going to be a two-parter, so there is no need to launch a campaign for a series renewal. Here is what we know so far about the next installment in the biopic series.
The streamer has yet to announce an exact release date, but according to a recent L.A. Times interview (opens in new tab) with Christian Serratos, who plays Selena, filming for the second (and final) part of the show has already been completed. After Netflix gave the series the go-ahead at the end of 2018, production on part one began the following October, about a year before the episode's December 2020 release date; if Netflix follows this schedule, part two will be streaming around the same time in 2021 will be available for streaming at the same time in 2021.
Part 1 of "Selena: The Series" chronicles Selena's early life and career, ending in 1990. Selena had just released her second solo album and had developed a secret relationship with Perez, much to her father's annoyance. The second season would likely pick up where the first season left off, following Selena's awe-inspiring rise to national and international fame in the final years of her life. [It would dramatize her elopement with Perez in 1992, the start of her sideline as a fashion designer, her landmark Grammy win in 1994, and, sadly, her murder in March 1995 at the hands of her best friend and president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar. The series will be dramatized in the second part of the series. Overall, the Selena of the second part of the series is the Selena who remained an icon for 25 years after her death: a confident superstar in glamorous, glittering outfits, singing her heart out to early 90s hits like "Como la Flor."
There should be no major changes in the cast between seasons - especially since they are all perfectly matched to their real-life inspirations (opens in new tab) - except for the casting of a yet-to-be-named actor to play Saldivar. Part 2 of Serena: The Series will probably not feature the child actors who played the childhood roles of Serena and her siblings in the first few episodes. On the other hand, Perez (Jesse Posey) will play a larger role in Part 2, and Selena's very protective father and slash manager Abraham (Ricardo Chavira) will continue to loom large in the singer's life on and off stage.
Selena herself will also undergo one small change that may not be outwardly noticeable but will allow Serratos to better capture the essence of the legendary singer: the actor told the L.A. Times that during the filming of Part 2, she insisted on doing her own makeup "Her eyebrows and eyeliner and lips," she said. "Her eyebrows and eyeliner and lips were very special to me," she said. But every time I did my own makeup on set, I felt like I was getting closer to her. Going to work and doing my makeup was the start of my day. In season two, I thought, 'I want to do that. Serena did her own makeup, so I'm going to do mine.'"
"I was like, 'I'm going to do my own makeup.'
