Beauty Inside & Outside Dawn Russell
In the ultimate quest for inner beauty and outer radiance, Marie Claire asked some of her favorite trailblazers to share their secrets for finding balance in their busy lives. Published in Beauty Inside & Out.
Nothing is more fitting than a dreaded health scare to turn your life plans around. For model-turned-8Greens founder Dawn Russell, her search for alternative therapies began when she was diagnosed with stage III lymphatic cancer at age 25. What she found was actually very simple. And later discovered that 87% of Americans are deficient; after five years of testing and hundreds of prescriptions, her first 8Greens (open in new tab) effervescent supplement was born. As a London-based entrepreneur and mother, she is committed to maintaining balance to stay healthy, glowing, and strong. Says Russell, "I always take a nap if I can before [the New York headquarters] opens and the kids come home from school." I know this is a Spanish thing and not very American," Russell says, "but I feel most effective doing this. Down the road, she'll share more feel-good tips and her favorite recipes for a guilt-free sweet treat.
8Greens Daily Effervescent Tablets (opens in new tab) 'I drink them all day long. I have found that greens literally make my body's engine work better. So my big goal is to get me and my loved ones to consume as much greens as possible. It is not an easy task, hence I created 8Greens, but it is worth the effort. My brain works faster and clearer, I feel less tired throughout the day, and my digestion and sugar cravings are more controllable." Acupuncture "I went to acupuncture school and my Chinese professor explained to me that acupuncture keeps the internal organ system moving so that the organs are not overloaded. This is the best preventive method. After a good session, my whole body moves better and I feel lighter."
Cupping Cupping sucks all the heat and toxins out of the body. I have poor lymphatic flow and need help moving everything in my body. It's like my body only has half a filter system, so I need help with the systems I have."
Headspace 'This app helps me and my boys turn off the noise in our brains at the end of the day and begin to relax to sleep.' I like that it is mainstream and simple enough that my boys don't find it odd. It feels natural as opposed to meditation."
Epsom Salt Bath "Along with acupuncture, cupping, and app headspace, the Epsom salt bath is a necessity in my life. Once a week, I take a whole bag into the bath. After bathing, I lay a towel on my bed to dry myself off and wait for the Epsom salt brine to penetrate my skin. It's a great way to casually detox while you sleep," he says.
Le Labo 31 Rose Eau de Parfum (opens in new tab) and Hand and Body Lotion (opens in new tab) The body lotion makes me feel like a little girl playing dress-up or an elegant French woman applying layers of fragrance and lotion to her body. This scent has become my signature. People know me by this scent. Even cab drivers comment on the scent. It has become "mine." I don't follow trends or wear makeup or jewelry, so I realized that this scent has become a part of me."
8Greens Skin + Collagen Supplement (open in new tab) 'I take it throughout the day. I can't remember when I last had a facial, so this is a way to seamlessly incorporate daily skin care into my hectic schedule. I just think I checked that box and it doesn't take long."
Chlorane Dry Shampoo (opens in new tab) "I use it to make my hair as messy as a bed head. When I lived in Paris as a young teen I was introduced to this French classic. I have a lot of hair and frequently wash my hair and it gets dry. I spray Clorane on the roots of my hair, turn my head upside down and shake out the excess, and I can see my hair getting better and better on the second and third day. However, I use Klorane when I work out and wash it every other day."
Westman Atelier I Love You Mascara "The team at Westman Atelier lives by the same efficacy, sustainability, and quality as us 8 Greens. Gucci is a friend and I know firsthand that she takes the time to ensure that every detail of her products is of the highest quality. The more I learn about the ins and outs of the beauty world, the more I realize how rare this is."
