Any and all theories about who shot Jack in "Virgin River".

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR "VIRGIN RIVER" SEASON 2 The second season of Netflix's "Virgin River" (opens in new tab) is somehow even more twisted than the first, as the residents of the Northern California town (opens in new tab), plagued by love triangles, sudden arrivals, and medical scares - basically any shocking fact you can think of was revealed at least once in the latest group of episodes. Most brutal for both the characters and the viewers were the multiple cliffhangers left at the end of Season 2. Among them, Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) found Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) bleeding on the floor of a bar with a bullet in his stomach literally seconds before the credits began to roll.

Theories are apparently flying around the internet as to who shot Jack. And while the show has yet to be renewed for a third season (open in new tab), there is evidence that it is already filming, with the cast and crew talking about the show's future at a recent press tour as if a season three has been decided. As such, it's time to delve deeper into the various theories regarding the identity of Jack's shooter.

Here, we'll (tentatively) rank those theories from most credible to least, keeping in mind what showrunner Sue Tenney recently told Parade (open in new tab): "The only thing I can say is that not everything is as it seems. (Incidentally, she also implied in the interview that Jack will survive the gunshot because he is supposed to be tied to Mel.)

This is obvious. Jack had been focused all season on cracking down on Calvin's illegal marijuana cultivation and distribution scheme, but only minutes before the shooting, he learned that it had recently expanded to include fentanyl production. Calvin (David Cubitt) has already proven to be extremely vindictive and unafraid to order his enemies to kill, and it makes perfect sense that he would seek deadly revenge on Jack for having him arrested.

But this reasoning is too obvious."

According to Tenney's warning and Breckenridge's recent speculation, this line may be a bit of a red herring." The writers are definitely making us think it's that group of people, Calvin's group of people," she tweeted to Entertainment Tonight (open in new tab), but added, "If there's a season 3, there could be a twist."

This is really just an extension of theory number one, since Jimmy (Ian Tracy) is Calvin's go-to guy to carry out the dirty work. There is also the fact that Jimmy stated early in the season that he wanted to "put a bullet between (Jack's) eyes. If he was the killer, then his aim was way off.

Brady may be solid. On the other hand, Mel told Jack that he had a feeling that Brady (Ben Hollingsworth) wanted to get out of Calvin's gang and go straight. He was also the one who sealed Jimmy's death threat, and it was eventually revealed that he had failed to kill Spencer even after Calvin's order, making it even less likely that he would shoot his former friend and fellow Marine.

Meanwhile, Brady willingly joined Calvin's gang, and shortly before the shooting it was learned that he was about to be arrested in connection with a drug distribution scheme. Furthermore, Jack was shot in the stomach, an injury that is usually survivable in the world of film and television, indicating that the shooter may not have actually intended to kill.

While annoying if true, it is definitely a real possibility. There is no doubt that this is the kind of development that Tenney and Breckenridge are hinting at, and there is some evidence to support this. For example, the shooting seemed to be a rush job (it happened just before Mel was supposed to show up at Jack's bar, and only two chairs were overturned), and previously unseen figures are constantly appearing throughout the town of Virgin River. However, if we begin to believe this theory, we must also consider the possibility that Jack was not the intended target.

The least likely is that Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) shot the casual friendship-turned-dad, but this theory has a big supporter in Jack himself. He said, "It's definitely Charmaine. I mean, do the math. I'm convinced," Henderson joked to ET.

Certainly, Jack's lack of commitment is frustrating, and certainly, in their last encounter of the season, Charmaine was angry because she felt he was treating her like she was crazy. Charmaine probably didn't want the father of her child to die, but she may have shot him in the stomach in frustration. Wait, is this actually the most common sense theory?
