Who is Zach Clark, the leading candidate for "Bachelorette" with a courageous background?
Spoilers for this season's The Bachelorette. A lot happened on The Bachelorette this season, to say the least. After Claire Crawley left her season to join contestant Dale Moss, (opens in new tab) Bachelor Nation favorite Tayshia Adams (opens in new tab) took over (if you're curious, click here (opens in new tab) for this season's full (You can read the full spoiler here (opens in a new tab)). One contestant who survived the elimination round from Crawley and later became important to Adams was Zach Clark (opens in new tab). He has a courageous and in some ways unconventional story for a contestant. He has been sober for many years and his life's work is dedicated to helping others like him, including a New York City sober living facility he co-founded to help people in recovery. Here is what we know about him at this point (this article contains spoilers at the end, so if you don't want to know, don't read the small column).
Clark is from Haddonfield, New Jersey. Given that his facility is in upstate New York, it is likely that he lives nearby. This is a long way from Adams, who is from Orange County, California.
He played baseball in college and initially intended to pursue a sports career (open in new tab); according to his official ABC bio (open in new tab), he is still obsessed with Philly sports, especially the Eagles, and celebrates sporting events with his family. Like Adams, Clark was married once and divorced.
His love for his family is evident throughout his social media:
According to a recent Instagram, Zach was actually nominated by a friend to be the Bachelorette:
Reality Steve first found Reading Eagle (new tab open in a new tab), in which Clark had already spoken about addiction and recovery in 2014. In that article, he discusses his history of early addictions that began with alcohol as a child, Adderall and other prescription drugs during college, morphine and other powerful prescription drugs after the removal of a brain tumor, and culminating in the removal of his gall bladder himself to obtain more prescription drugs. He spent four and a half months in a treatment center after being arrested for possession of crack cocaine and driving under the influence. From the article
But even after treatment, his internal struggles continue. Don't let this suit fool you." I am an alcoholic, drug-addicted, depraved person."
Clark is now sober and has been working on helping others for almost a decade. In this video, he talks about his experiences, motivations, and current work:
Clark founded Release Recovery (open in new tab) in 2017 with co-founder Justin Garland. The facility is a 17-bed transitional living facility in Westchester, NY that focuses on connection and community for addicts who want to recover. It also has a center for women on the Upper East Side of New York City and will open a men's program in New York City in 2020. They also counsel families and individuals who need help and have professional relationships with addiction specialists and mental health professionals. Recently, New York Senator Shelley Meyer visited:
In addition, Clark runs marathons to raise funds and awareness about addiction and mental health.
Clark and Crowley were not often seen on screen together, but things really take off after meeting Adams. If you don't want the ending spoiled, stop reading.
There's more" Okay, here's the thing: According to Reality Steve, Clark wins Adams' season. He gets her last rose, but Reality Steve has not confirmed if the two will be engaged or even if they are still dating. It has been suggested that Adams may still have the torch to another contestant, Brendan Morais (open in new tab). Another contestant, Ben Smith (open in new tab), was eliminated but returned for the finale.
Reality Steve made it clear before the finale. So that bit of information was probably incorrect. Teysha has mentioned the words husband and engagement many times in the last few episodes. The only two times that has happened in the past approximately 30 seasons have been Juan Pablo and Colton. That doesn't happen here. So she definitely chose Zach, and it's very likely that they got engaged."
Adams' side has stated that they absolutely fell in love during the season, and knowing that she handed Clark the last rose, it is safe to assume that they fell hard. However, Adams also said that she told several contestants that she loved them (open in new tab), which may mean that she loved Morais and others as well.
RS writes (opens in new tab). Several people said they weren't together, some said they were still together but not as firmly, some said it wouldn't last. She is a California girl who wants to be an influencer. He runs a sober living facility in NY. So that's kind of where we stand at this point."
There are also questions about the quote unquote "engagement ring" Adams was seen wearing in her Instagram story. Reality Steve says (open in new tab): "If she's engaged, I don't think she'd be stupid enough to take a picture with the ring on, but I've seen people ruin rings in the past, so it can't be that unbelievable."
In any case, since there will be no After the Final Rose this year due to quarantine precautions, we will have a zoom call between Chris Harrison and Adams and Clark, or, if they are broken up, a zoom call between Harrison and each of them to get all questions may have to be answered. But we shall see.
