10 Good Things Happening in 2020

Unless you are Joe Biden or Taylor Swift, 2020 was a terrible year. Unfortunately for my mental health, I am a comedy writer and the only way I know how to process fear, grief, and trauma is to write jokes about it. (And to watch "The Great British Baking Show" (opens in new tab)). Plus, you can make money writing jokes about it. So, in this time of anxiety and upheaval, I gathered a group of like-minded insane people (Karen Chi, Akira Green, Francesca Ramsey, and Jocelyn Richard) and wrote a comedy special about the year 2020. It's called "Yearly Departed," hosted by Phoebe Robinson, and can be seen on Amazon Prime on December 30. In the meantime, I have compiled a list of things that have made me laugh or smile this year. So, in the spirit of finding light in these dark times, here are 10 good things that happened in 2020.

1. Rudy Giuliani's press conference at the Four Seasons. Infinite comedians could write jokes forever, but none would be as funny as Rudy Giuliani trying to flip an election in the wrong parking lot (opens in new tab).

2. Vaccines I can't wait to get my COVID-19 vaccination. That way I can keep scrolling through my phone without stepping out of my house.

3. The cast and crew of Succession have begun filming the next season, despite immense odds and great risk to their own safety and lives (opens in new tab). It's just nice to have something to look forward to, and I'm personally looking forward to the 2021 civ blunt bob/turtleneck/pants combo.

4. He is all the rage. He spends all day with his parents, eating candy and stacking various blocks. He was placed in captivity when he was seven months old, but now he is a grown man with hair parted to the side and a small, lucrative accounting firm. The biggest marker of the passage of time is that in March he was an infant living solely on his mother's milk, and now he'll split a pad thai between the two of us while screaming "BAD." at a cat scratching the couch.

5. No unpleasant, anxiety-ridden office end-of-year parties. I used to get drunk a lot because I was nervous about being with my co-workers' spouses. I once got so drunk that I made plans to do karaoke in Burbank with a woman I had met 20 minutes earlier.

6. More people bake elaborate cakes on TikTok than ever before. It's so soothing to watch people twirling cakes on little spinning trays while evenly applying the icing with a tool that looks like a stack of bricks. I spend about 10 minutes a day watching Cake TikTok, and it keeps me going through life.

7. Britney Spears looks fine. She thrives on Instagram in a way that almost seems desperate. Remember: we did this to her. Our collective obsession has trapped her at 16, and now she is the Peter Pan of women who wear crop tops bought at the mall and think butterflies on teacups are the height of luxury. But she looks healthy, is in love with a bodybuilder, and is only positive.

8. It has become socially acceptable to walk around town in sweatpants (opens in new tab) with no bra. Yes, I gave up completely. Somehow, every time I look like a woman just out of a mental hospital, I run into a friend who is incredibly chic. That's you. How are you?" And I vow to make an effort the next day, but I never do.

9. 9. Someone hacked Trump's Twitter (opens in new tab). Breathtaking stupidity and danger in equal measure: classic Trump.

10. and he lost. I was several steps into the process of moving to Canada just in case, but now I can safely stay in my home where my cat can destroy the couch.
