Trump was banned from Twitter - here's how the world reacted

Well, folks, it finally happened: Twitter Inc. has banned President Donald Trump from its platform. The ban comes four years after two dangerous tirades sent by President Trump shortly after Wednesday's Capitol riots. Twitter said in a statement (opens in new tab), "In our judgment, the above two tweets are likely to provoke others to reenact the acts of violence that occurred on January 6, 2021." Earlier this week, social platforms from Facebook to Twitch banned the president in the aftermath of the Capitol riots (opens in new tab) and his childish response. (opens in new tab)

First tweet: "The 75,000,000 great American patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN will have a huge voice in the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!" The other is, "To all who have inquired, I will not be at the inauguration on January 20." As Twitter noted, these statements imply that "Inauguration Day is a 'safe' target because I will not be attending" and "show support for those who commit acts of violence on Capitol Hill." Twitter also noted: "Plans for future armed protests have already begun to spread both on and off Twitter.

It is nothing short of extraordinary that a sitting president would be banned from social media. If not entirely surprising, given President Trump's painfully inept response to the supporters who stormed the Capitol. Here is how the world reacted to the news.
