Cori Bush Tells Republican Officials Refusing Metal Detectors: Find Another Job
New security measures, including metal detectors and personal protection, have been introduced at the U.S. Capitol (opens in new tab) after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol last week. Not all members of Congress are happy with the changes, however. Yesterday evening, as House members entered the chamber to vote on a resolution (opens in new tab) calling on Vice President Mike Pence to strip Donald Trump of his presidential powers through the 25th Amendment (opens in new tab) to the Constitution, some Republican lawmakers refused to go through the detectors (opens in new tab). They refused to go through the detectors (opens in new tab).
In response, newly elected Democratic Congresswoman Cori Bush (open in new tab) offered a suggestion: look for a new job."
Speaking with MSNBC's Chris Hayes, Bush said, "First of all, we're talking about your job. Let's look at it from the most basic level: if you work at McDonald's, you have to wear a uniform. Wherever you are, you have to say, 'You have to do this. You have to do this. If you don't, you don't work. Have they ever worked?
She later added, "To say that this is against your rights is bullshit. Again, it is an attempt to push the envelope as far as they can. Some legislators want to carry guns on the floor of the House. Some legislators want to bring guns into office buildings. This is where we should feel safe and you are bringing guns into an office building. I do not feel safe in those places. Many people don't feel safe in that. If you don't abide by the simple things that this job requires, then find another job."
In November, Bush defeated Republican Anthony Rogers in a landslide victory, becoming the first black woman to be elected to Congress from Missouri (opens in new tab).
