Kamala Harris' stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, shows everyone at the inauguration.
Ella Emhoff did not come to the inauguration to play. The stepdaughter of new Vice President Kamala Harris (open in new tab), she took the national stage wearing a broad-shouldered coat accented with an embroidered downy collar. Her curly hair was center-parted with a headband, and her bashful smile, visible even under her black mask, gave off a nice vibe. Was there ever a cooler person among D.C.'s elite?
Even before today's amazing show began, Ella was poised to become a national style icon in the next four years. The newborn second daughter, a New York-based artist and Parsons textile design student, has become something of a hero to slow-fashion lovers, showcasing her art-girl taste and handmade knitwear on Instagram (opens in new tab) She's been doing it for a while now. It's hard not to smile back as you scroll through her gorgeous, ugly-cute selfie feed, flaunt your armpit hair, and smile sarcastically at the camera.
In a previous interview with Garage (opens in new tab), Ella revealed what she might wear to the inauguration and discussed the possibility of knitting her own suit for the big day. 'I would love to, but as I said before, my style and what I practice are totally different, so I may have to make an exception. She said. In the end, she didn't follow through, but she certainly provided an outfit worthy of her unabashedly artistic taste.
The American public can only hope that this is the first of the legendary Ella Emhoff looks, and it's about time someone came along to shake up the staid, one-note style that has long dominated the hallowed halls of power in D.C.
