Jennifer Lopez calls for unity in Spanish at inauguration
On stage at the inauguration, singer Jennifer Lopez sang "This Land Is Your Land." Then she turned to Spanish and said, "Una nacíon bajo Dios con libertad y justicia para todos." One nation under God, freedom and justice for all. Lopez, who has Puerto Rican parents, attended the inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris (open in new tab).
Throughout her career, Lopez has paved the way for Latinos around the world. In her acting and singing career, Lopez created a space for others to follow in her footsteps and gave young Latino girls role models they could look up to and strive to emulate. Under the previous administration, Latinos and Hispanics were alternatively called "bad guys," vilified, and locked in cages at the border, and the sight of a Latina speaking Spanish and calling for justice for all speaks volumes.
Coupled with President Biden's pledge to reunite children separated at the border with their parents (open in new tab), this new tone is a welcome change.
Just minutes after Vice President Kamala Harris was sworn in as the first woman and first vice president of color, Lopez's ascension to the podium has already shown that diversity will be a key cornerstone of the Biden administration.
