Who are Joe Biden's grandchildren from 7 months old to 26 years old?
President-elect Joe Biden Jr. on his way to the White House is as close as ever with his family, especially his grandchildren (opens in new tab). Even in the midst of a pandemic, Joe says he makes a constant effort to talk to his family, especially his grandchildren Naomi, Finnegan, Maisie, Natalie, and Robert. He says, "Actually, my son Beau's (opens in new tab) kids live a mile away. They walk through the woods and through the neighborhood and sit in the backyard in two chairs. I miss them."
This closeness has not changed since Joe won the White House. Says Maisie: "He calls me, he calls Naomi, he calls Finn, he calls Natalie, he calls Ashley, and he calls little Hunter." His older grandchildren, in particular, have recently made appearances for him and have spoken of their closeness to the president-elect. So who are they, and what do we know so far?
Naomi (opens in new tab) is the oldest daughter of Joe's second son, Hunter Biden (opens in new tab). Named after Joe's young daughter, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident along with Joe's first wife (opens in new tab), she is passionate about politics. When Joe was vice president, she accompanied him on overseas trips to New Zealand and China. She is a vocal supporter of her grandfather on Twitter (opens in new tab) and Instagram, and thanks to her, we can peek into her life and the lives of Biden's other grandchildren (such as this photo with her sister Finnegan):
She is dating Peter Neal, also a law student ( opens in new tab) and is dating (Naomi graduated from Columbia Law School (opens in new tab) in May), and the two recently collaborated on a quiz to help people understand if they qualify for aid under the CARES Act. The quiz helped more than 10,000 people receive assistance from the $2.2 trillion stimulus package.
The two told MTV News (opens in new tab) that it took them a total of nearly 48 hours to look through all 335 pages of the stimulus package, create the quiz, and code the website. The only time she took a break was to get three hours of sleep and "it was either that or watch 'Curve Your Enthusiasm' three times in a row," Naomi told MTV News.
During the DNC, she tweeted that she was proud to be Joe's granddaughter and proud to be an American:
Back in 2018, Tiffany Trump posted a photo on her Instagram Story of the two of them on a weekend trip in the Hamptons ( opens in new tab), wondering how the two crossed paths: they both attended the University of Pennsylvania together at the same time.
Finnegan's Instagram (opens in new tab) is private and she is not as vocal as her sister, but she accompanied Joe on international trips when he was vice president and even took the stage at a Nevada party rally. She is named after Joe's mother (open in new tab), Jean Finnegan, a student at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also the daughter of Hunter Biden.
She appeared at the February Iowa rally (open in new tab), and Joe specifically mentioned her:
"I want to introduce my granddaughter, Finnegan Biden. The reason I asked Finnegan is because grandfathers are always allowed to embarrass their granddaughters. That's what makes it so wonderful. Thank you, baby."
In an interview on her grandfather's inauguration day, Finnegan mentioned how grateful she was for Sasha and Malia Obama's friendship and support (opens in new tab). Maisie and I, and Natalie and Naomi, were able to watch two of our friends go through a really difficult eight-year period."
Maisie, the youngest of the Hunter girls, also traveled abroad with Joe's work, including to Bogota, Colombia.
She is especially close to Sasha Obama. (Opens in new tab) "Her best friend is Sasha Obama. We celebrated with Barack and Jill and the whole family."
The two used to play on the same basketball team together, and President Obama has praised her skills and predicts she may one day play in the WNBA. Maisie and Sasha apparently joined Joe at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup Canada.Maisie says that even when her grandfather was serving as vice president, he prioritized her games. She said, "He came to every single one of my soccer games, lacrosse games, and basketball games, and I just saw him on TV about a half hour ago, and I was like, 'How the hell did he get here?' He was like, 'Don't worry, I knew it was an important game today'"
.
When Maisie graduated in 2019, she was commemorated by Naomi (of course) and the entire (extended) family gathered:
For the family gathering, Joe had to miss the Iowa Democratic Hall of Fame Dinner in June 2019, which drew backlash from some politicians He responded to their comments with the following (open in new tab):
"My granddaughter was at graduation. It was my daughter's birthday. I know some people were surprised that I made that choice, but I don't know why. There are more important things than running for president. So I make the same decision every time."
More recently, Maisie has been sharing creative animations, lip-syncs, and inspired (non-alcoholic) drink recipes on TikTok (opens in new tab).
Natalie is the eldest daughter of the late Beau Biden-Joe, who died of brain cancer (opens in new tab) in 2015. She is younger and more private, but more visible these days in support of her grandfather.
Natalie recently (open in new tab) spoke about her grandmother, Jill Biden, during the DNC, saying, "I can tell you she's not your average grandmother," adding, "She's mischievous and very mischievous.
"Sometimes when she goes for a run, she finds a dead snake, picks it up, puts it in a bag, and uses it to scare someone," she said, laughing.
In October, Natalie and Naomi teamed up with model Kaia Gerber for an election Q&A on Instagram (opens in new tab) to encourage young people and first-time voters. Naomi noted that although she is too young to vote, social media platforms have the power to "inform people and tell them what we stand for."
Robert is Bo's younger son and is called "Hunter" after his uncle. Robert has traveled with his grandfather (the photo above is from the 2008 DNC when Hunter was still a child). Now older, he occasionally appears on Naomi's feed:
and he was featured in a video at the 2020 DNC where his grandchildren recite the Pledge of Allegiance:
Joe has two other grandchildren: in 2018, Landen Alexis Roberts gave birth to a child and in 2020 In 2020, Joe's son Hunter proved to be the father. He agreed to pay child support (opens in new tab).
Hunter also married filmmaker Melissa Cohen (opens in new tab) in 2019, and in March 2020, a "beautiful, healthy boy" was born, just as the pandemic began. Joe has not yet met either child (direct visitation may be difficult due to the pandemic), and there is privacy around both of them for obvious reasons.
Naomi, Finnegan, Maisie, and Natalie Biden speaking at the DNC. From left to right: Maisie, Finnegan, Naomi, and Natalie. In the video, they talk about how worried they were about their health and media scrutiny if Joe ran for president in 2020, and how they fully supported him.
After Joe officially declared his candidacy for president, Naomi told us that her grandchildren bought her a pint of vanilla, one of Joe's favorite ice cream flavors, to celebrate (opens in new tab):
Biden's granddaughters interviewed the DNC in August (open in new tab), they said of their grandfather: "He always eats ice cream. Usually vanilla, half chocolate, half vanilla Breyers. He likes hidden ice cream". Natalie replied, "He eats it in the freezer so Grandma won't find it."
After the election, Naomi tweeted a cute picture of her grandparents before the results were announced, writing, "They have come a long, long way together."
And of course, once the results came out that her grandfather had won Pennsylvania and was officially president-elect (open in new tab), the group hug began, and according to NBC's Mike Memory (open in new tab), the family was "enjoying the warm fall weather on their backyard patio Saturday morning. They were just enjoying the warm fall weather on their backyard patio when a chorus of applause erupted from inside the house."
Naomi then shared this heartwarming photo of her smiling grandfather and group hug. She captioned the photo "11.07.20," referring to the historic day.
