Nail Artist Naomi Yasuda's 24 Hours

Nail Artist Naomi Yasuda's 24 Hours

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?

Even if you don't know the name Naomi Yasuda (open in new tab), you've no doubt seen her work. Yasuda's nail art has graced the hands of celebrities such as Madonna (open in new tab), Asap Rocky (open in new tab), Lady Gaga (open in new tab), and Nicki Minaj (open in new tab). With an eye for intricate detail and a dramatic appeal that could take a lifetime to achieve, Yasuda's manicuring skills are legendary in Hollywood circles. Below, the New York-based artist reveals her signature look for zoom calls, her dedication to SPF, and her love of Asian drugstore finds.

I wake up before 9:00 a.m. and jump in the shower with a glass of water first. Then I make coffee. I don't eat much breakfast, so I drink my morning coffee with oat milk and powdered collagen.

Sunscreen is a must. I apply it every day even if I don't go outside. I use Biore UV Aqua Rich (opens in new tab). I absolutely love this sunscreen. It's a clear gel, my skin absorbs it nicely, and it's very lightweight. And I love working out in the morning. It sets the tone for a productive day. Before the blockade, I used to go to Overthrow Boxing (opens in new tab) and New York Pilates (opens in new tab) every week.

When I'm working, I usually wear my hair in a ponytail or bun. On my days off, I wash my hair and dry it with a hair dryer. I put a little Moroccanoil treatment oil (opens in new tab) and coconut oil. It's heavy, but I have a lot of hair and it's very dry from bleaching. It brings out my natural waves.

My favorite look is winged eyeliner and mascara. I'm a huge fan of Asian drugstore cosmetics. I stock up every time I go to Japan. It's a really quick way to get ready for a night out. The red lip is my favorite - MAC Lady Danger (opens in new tab).

I want to look healthy and fresh in front of the camera, so I wear highlighter and blush. I apply Glossier's Haloscope highlighter (opens in new tab) and Tom Ford blush in Frantic Pink. (Opens in a new tab.) Glossier's highlighter gives me a natural glow, and Tom Ford's blush is easy to use, not too powdery, and still has good color.

I am easily trapped by my smartphone. When I spend more time on my smartphone than interacting with real people, it becomes very unhealthy mentally. So I limit my social media access to no more than an hour a day. When I go to bed, I put my phone on airplane mode. When I feel bored or depressed, I play the piano.

I have loved doing nails since I was a little girl. I didn't have to think too much about it when choosing this career. The best career advice I ever heard was, "Be humble. Experience and practice make the difference."

After removing my makeup, I wash my face with Shiseido's Perfect Whip (opens in new tab), which I have used since I was 18. I also take a bath almost every day. I soak in the bathtub for 20 to 30 minutes. It relaxes my muscles and helps me sleep well. I usually go to bed between 11 pm and 1 am
