Netflix "Lupin" Part 2: Everything We Know

Netflix "Lupin" Part 2: Everything We Know

A word of advice to filmmakers outside the U.S. who want Netflix to adopt their foreign-language series: make it about heists. For example, less than a year after Netflix acquired the rights to "Money Heist," the Spanish crime drama (open in new tab) became Netflix's most-watched non-English language series and one of the most-watched Netflix originals overall. More recently, upon its January 8 release, "Lupin" became the first French show to debut in Netflix's U.S. Top 10, and the mystery-comedy series doesn't appear to be planning on exiting anytime soon.

In "Lupin," Omar Sy plays Assane Diop, a man on a mission to avenge his father's death in prison after his boss, Hubert Pellegrini (played by Hervé Pierre), frames him for stealing a diamond necklace. Decades after his father's death, Diop, inspired by Maurice Leblanc's classic novel, becomes a master of disguise and subterfuge, like Leblanc's character Arsene Lupin, in order to expose the crimes of the Pellegrini family. In a nutshell, it is as if Danny Ocean were French and decided to organize a heist for moral rather than merely financial gain.

With the first five episodes of Lupin already entering the homes of Netflix users around the world, the next question is whether new episodes of the series will be delivered in the near future. Let's answer that question simply. Oy. Longer answer." read more

Not yet, but there's no need to panic: The five episodes currently available on Netflix are just the first half of season one; according to the official announcement on January 28, all 10 episodes were written and filmed in Paris at the same time, so part two should be available within a few months. It will be available for streaming distribution; Netflix has split seasons in half several times before, including "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," "The Adventures of Sabrina," and the "Unsolved Mysteries" reboot. Furthermore, given the huge success of the first episode, it seems safe to assume that "Lupin" will have been renewed for a full second season by the time part two airs.

Under Netflix's previous split-season schedule, the second half of "Unsolved Mysteries" premiered just three and a half months after the first season, and the final episode of "Kimmy Schmidt's" fourth season took eight months to debut. Meanwhile, the first season of CAOS was in two parts, six months apart, and the two parts of the second season were almost a year apart.

Therefore, based on these timelines, part two of Lupin's first season could be released as early as mid-April or as late as the end of December, and Netflix initially gave few hints as to its release date. After watching the last episode of Lupin, a screen saying "It's official:" appears before a preview of another show autoplays.

But finally, in the aforementioned January 28 announcement, Netflix gave a (still rather vague) clarification on the release schedule for part two: according to Flix, the next five episodes will be available around this summer, but will it resume with Diop as soon as June? or if the new episodes will be delivered closer to July 15, the 116th anniversary of the publication of Maurice Leblanc's first Arsène Lupin story, no further hints were given. Perhaps now is the time to test the "power of positive thinking" and make the first broadcast in early June happen.

Unfortunately, the Lupin cast seems to be as in the dark as we are about the exact release dates of the next five episodes. When Vincent Londes, who plays the gruff detective Romain Roget in the series, was asked by a fan in an Instagram comment (opens in new tab) when Part 2 would be available on Netflix, he replied, "I don't know yet," and then, in an anguish befitting such an answer or instead of a sobbing emoji, he inexplicably accompanied it with a very smiling emoji.

In better news, the show's creators seem determined to stretch Diop's story far beyond one season. Showrunner George Kay told Variety (open in new tab) that the first 10 episodes are just "the origin of how Asane got here." And in a recent interview with Vanity Fair magazine (opens in new tab), Kaye said that a third season (...) has already stated that she has begun plotting the possibility of a third season of the show.

In the future, we will see a change in Diop's typical confidence and smooth moves, Sy told Variety. 'His main tool is his head, and it's hard for him to work with his emotions (heart and gut). Now his son is in danger and he has to work with his instincts.

Without giving too much away, Lupin's Part 1 ended with multiple major cliffhangers in Diop's revenge plot, just as the budding robbery-meister was thoroughly entangled in an even wider web of deceit and pervasive corruption. In the next episode, perhaps Diop and his estranged wife Claire, played by Ludivine Sagnier, will do whatever it takes to reunite with their son, while Diop will find a way to convince Detective Yusef Gedira (Sufian Gelab) that he is one of the good guys (for a bit). He will find out. On top of that, he will also have to fulfill his original mission of exposing the Pellegrini family's wrongdoings and clearing his father's name. It's a perfectly normal to-do list.

Kay, the show's creator, further revealed the plot of part two to Vanity Fair. For one thing, it will continue to feature flashbacks to before Diop became the gentleman thief he is today. The backstory is about how Diop got to that point. 'We still don't know what happened between the time he was 15 and the time he turned 40. So we're kind of retrospectively educating ourselves on this enormous backstory."

He also said that Part 2 will finalize Diop's revenge plot against the Pellegrini family and include several more of Lupin's now signature action scenes set in Paris' most famous landmarks, rivaling the scale of his shocking jewel heist at the Louvre revealed. . and Kay hinted."
