How Vintner's Daughter founder April Gargiulo makes her own skin glow

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's bi-weekly look into the daily lives of women in various industries. How do these women manage to get through their day's work?

April Gargiulo (open in new tab), who grew up in a winemaking family, has long respected the beauty of high-quality natural products and believed in preserving their source. And when she launched Vintners Daughter (open in new tab) in 2014, she instilled those same values into her now cult-favorite skincare line. The brand produces only two beloved products formulated with plant-based extracts and oils and is committed to sustainability, from responsible sourcing of raw materials to recyclable glass bottles and post-consumer-use recycling bins printed with eco-friendly inks. Here is a snapshot of a simple yet thoughtful day in the life of the Napa-based founder and mother of two.

I get up at 7:30 a.m. It's a struggle. The first thing I do is hug my family, who get up much earlier than I do and thankfully let me sleep in a little longer.

I spend 10 minutes getting ready. I prefer better products that are fewer in number, but really deliver results. I cleanse with a gentle cream cleanser and apply Active Treatment Essence (open in new tab) followed by Active Botanical Serum (open in new tab). I consider the serum to be my signature scent. With these two steps, my skin receives all the moisture, hydration, nourishment, and active botanicals it needs to be at its best. I wash my hair infrequently and can count on one hand the number of times I blow-dry it. Occasionally I run a curling iron through it, but more often than not I go out with it up.

Always skin-first, with a little mascara and lip gloss.

A huge pot of tea. It gives me a chance to get out of bed. I like to connect with nature through tea leaves. Jasmine spring tea (opens in new tab) is my go-to, but if I'm in the mood for something a little more uplifting, I'll go with Living tea (opens in new tab) or pu-erh tea (opens in new tab).

Pilates and hiking with friends - no set time.

Meditation.

Tracey Ellis Ross. She is my fashion, activism, and human icon.

Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Find your North Star and follow it relentlessly.

I like to weave baskets, though it's not yet a talent. It's practical, but a beautiful connection to the natural world.

Microcurrent, full bed red light, infrared sauna.

$10 ice roller (opens in new tab). Rolls over the face to improve lymph flow and reduce swelling.

My routine takes five minutes. I cleanse, apply Active Treatment Essence, Active Botanical Serum, and then a few minutes of my favorite face massage. It's so freeing not to be tied down to an elaborate multi-step routine, and the results are better.

I like to stay up late and late nights are my alone time. While my family is in bed, I stay up until midnight reading or watching Netflix. It's a little sleep deprived, but it's worth the quiet time.
