While it may be true that "milk is good for you," I like to start my day with a good dose of vitamin C, from my morning smoothie to my antioxidant skin care. A powerful antioxidant, this vitamin is thought to be a powerful treatment for sun damage and pigmentation, and Biossance combines it with eco-friendly sugarcane-derived (opens in new tab) squalane (anti-inflammatory) and white shiitake mushrooms to create Squalane & Vitamin C Dark Spot Serum (open in new tab).

The brand claims (opens in new tab) that this formula can help break up existing dark spots quickly while preventing new ones from forming - a negative-negative reaction. According to dermatologist Dhaval G. Bhanusali, M.D., products high in vitamin C can be irritating, but this serum contains squalane, which directly counteracts irritation. He added that squalane can help retain moisture and is usually well tolerated by all skin types. Cosmetic chemist Ginger King explains.

Add shiro shiitake mushrooms and you have a lean, mean, dark spot-fighting machine. King adds, "Shiro shiitake is a natural form of kojic acid, which brightens the skin, exfoliates, and prevents further dark spots."

I always try to stay ahead of the complexion changes that come with age. I am Filipino and Ukrainian with medium skin tone. The signs of aging have not yet manifested themselves in the form of wrinkles, but my battle with post-breakout spots has become more painful. I had no idea that my spots were actually post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation until Dr. Vanusari told me. It is common in people with richer skin tones," he says.

I was already using a serum with retinol to break up the concentrated pigmentation spots and boost collagen production, but the spots still remained for weeks. Once I started incorporating BioSans Squalane and Vitamin C Dark Spots (open in new tab) formula into my daily routine, it seemed as if I had hit the button to fast-forward the process of fading the overall spots. I applied two pumps twice a day and within a few days, I noticed that my complexion felt softer and more hydrated.

Two weeks later, the post-pimple marks I had been obsessing over during the video call had completely faded. Even my soul-crushing hormonal breakouts, which had come and gone during this period, had no chance of leaving their mark. Dr. Vanusari says that more concrete results will be seen in four weeks, but at the halfway point it already looks quite promising. In addition to visibly less pigmentation, my skin looked plumper, smoother, and more radiant (even in poor lighting).

Between its ability to lighten blemishes and soothe and moisturize, this formula was the one-two punch my skin needed.
