Is there a "To All the Boys" 4?
This article contains spoilers for "To All the Boys": always and forever. For the past few years, we've spent Valentine's Day swooning over unconventional high school love stories with Lara Jean Covey and Peter Kavinsky, played adorably by Lana Condor (opens in new tab) and Noah Centineo, respectively. (Lana Condor (open in new tab) and Noah Centineo each play adorably.) On Friday, the third and final film, "To All the Boys: Always and Forever," arrived on Netflix, showing them breaking up (well, physically, anyway) as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. But does their sweet story end here?
Fans want to know if Lara Jean and Peter will continue on, or if it's time to officially say goodbye to one of our favorite romantic comedy franchises (opens in new tab). Here's everything we know about the possibility of "To All the Boys 4" on Netflix.
Netflix's third film follows Lana Jean and Peter as high school seniors, and follows all the usual major life events for teenagers: prom, graduation, sex, choosing where to go to school, etc. LJ was rejected from Stanford University and eventually New York When he decides to attend college, things turn sour and threaten his relationship with Peter, who remains on the West Coast for college. Ultimately, the two decide to make their long-distance relationship work, and the film ends with Lara Jean settled into her New York dorm room, excited about whatever adventures life throws at her.
Simply put? Probably not, or at least not anytime soon. The film is based on author Jenny Han's trilogy ("To All the Boys I've Loved Before," "P.S. I Still Love You," and "Always and Forever, Lara Jean"), so the material Netflix is adapting as a fourth film is not available at this time.
Han also revealed to Marie Claire in a recent interview (open in new tab) that she is already busy working on new projects. She is writing a script for Shonda Rhimes' new Netflix anthology show Notes on Love (opens in new tab) (fitting), and is also working on another of her YA novels, The Summer I Turned Pretty, an 8-episode for Amazon She's helping to turn it into a series (opens in new tab). (So don't worry, you can still get your rom-com fix anyway.)
"So it's kind of fitting that as one story ends, another begins," Han told MC.
But never say never in Hollywood. Given that "To All the Boys" was a huge success for the streaming giant (and made Condor and Centineo bona fide stars), Netflix could always hire a screenwriter to work on material for a fourth film. After all, the area is ripe with stories: are Lara Jean and Peter struggling with a long-distance relationship? Lara Jean and Peter suffer from a long-distance love affair? The couple continues to write sweet love letters to each other throughout the semester and then reunite over the vacations.
Given that there is no script for the actors to consider, it is hard to say. However, it is clear that the young stars are all close friends and could be swayed if this project is brought up. (Opens in new tab) In a 2020 interview with Variety (opens in new tab), Centineo said he would participate: "If Jenny Han writes a fourth book, sign me up!"
And in a now-deleted tweet, (opens in new tab) Han responded to Centineo's comment with a thinking face emoji, and several other cast members chimed in. Condor tweeted, "Slow clap all around," and Ross Butler, who plays Peter's best friend in the film, replied, "Here for it if there's 'za."
Until then, watch "To All the Boys: Always and Forever" on Netflix (opens in new tab).
