Read MoreIn Hulu's latest documentary, WeWork: Or The Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn, filmmaker Jed Rothstein, the man who orchestrated the company's financial collapse He attempts to trace the company's inflated rise and fabulous fall through the lens of two tycoons, former CEO and co-founder Adam Neumann and, more surprisingly, his wife Rebecca. While Rebekah's involvement is not the primary crux of this document, she is portrayed as a powerful figure in both Adam's life and the company. (Her legacy was WeWork's first major investment, and she was eventually named the third "co-founder.")
In particular, Rebecca encouraged Adam's leadership and WeWork's culture to become more spiritual, but her detrimental additions to the business are well documented (open in new tab). If you are curious about Rebecca Neumann after watching this documentary, here is what we know about her life and what we know about her and Adam Neumann today.
At 43, her acting career was short-lived, with only four screen titles and a few producer credits on her IMDb page. Her most "notable" role is in the short film Awake, which she wrote, produced, and starred in at the offices of WeWork, opposite Rosario Dawson. She also appeared in the 2010 film Nomads, starring Lucy Liu." [According to her Bustle profile (opens in new tab), she studied business and Buddhism at Cornell University and briefly worked at Smith Barney after graduation. But she soon left the trading desk, spent several years studying spirituality in India, and then moved to Los Angeles to join a Kabbalah group and take acting lessons. (At one point he even trained to become a yoga teacher, but Adam encouraged him not to waste his time, as it is not a lucrative profession.)
That's right! Neumann's maiden name was Paltrow. Rebecca's father Bob was a brother to Gwyneth's father, the late Bruce Paltrow (which is why Rebecca is also the niece of actress Blythe Danner). Bob Paltrow pleaded guilty to felony tax evasion in 2014 and was subsequently sentenced to six months in prison (opens in new tab).
In 2007, Rebecca was introduced to Adam by one of her college friends (who met him on the roof of a building). One of Adam's most often recounted episodes is his first meeting with his now wife: "Within five minutes - I said five minutes out of kindness, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't ten seconds. Every word out of your mouth is a fake,'" Adam said in his commencement speech at Baruch College (opens in new tab).
Married in 2008, Adam has five children, including two sets of twins.
Shortly after WeWork's spectacular financial collapse, the couple retreated to Tel Aviv with $1.7 billion. However, according to Forbes (opens in new tab), the Neumanns returned home in May 2020 and now live in one of their homes in the Hamptons.
They also reportedly have plans to relaunch WeGrow, the educational arm of WeWork, as "Students of Life for Life," aka SOLFL (pronounced "soulful"). The school was arguably Rebecca's biggest passion project since launching in 2017. Until its closure, it boasted 100 students paying $20,000 to $40,000 a year in tuition.
