The secret behind Jennifer Garner's glowing, ageless skin

Whether she's on the big screen, at a red carpet event, or at home with her family, Jennifer Garner is always attractive. Under the bright lights of television, I can confirm that no staged tricks have been played--yes, Garner's 46-year-old skin is really pretty, and as a mother of three, she's always busy moving around.

So what's her secret? (You're welcome.)

"First, I wash my face every night, no matter what.

"Honestly, I don't wear makeup unless I have a reason to, but if I'm wearing eye makeup that day, I'll take it all off."

She adds: "I also hate that feeling where your skin looks sallow and flawless. The hyaluronic acid in Neutrogena's Hydro Boost (open in new tab) makes it plump, firm, and glowing. And, of course, sunscreen. Ultra Sheer 100 SPF (opens in new tab) blends well under makeup and makes everything look better."

But SPF and hyaluronic acid aren't all Garner loves. Garner shares, "My biggest skin care struggle has definitely been figuring out retinol." 'I'm in my mid-40s, and retinol is my most important anti-aging product. But I have sensitive skin, so everything people gave me made my face red, itchy, and blotchy. Neutrogena's Rapid Wrinkle Repair (opens in new tab) was a lifesaver for me. Because it contains oils, it is a little gentler than other retinols and doesn't irritate my skin."

It's a tricky ingredient. Retinoids, derivatives of vitamin A, can exfoliate the top layer of skin cells at light speed. This stimulates collagen production and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. However, it can also lead to exfoliation and dryness due to faster skin cell turnover.

If you have problems with retinol, dermatologist Howard Sobel recommends starting with a low dose: "Usually, a 1 percent concentration is a safe amount to use. Because retinol can increase sun sensitivity, it should be used primarily at night, with broad spectrum SPF protection during the day."

He adds: "To help with inflammation, look for products with ingredients that complement retinol performance, such as vitamin B3, vitamin C, and other soothing botanical ingredients. Neutrogena's is great because it is a low dose of retinol and contains hyaluronic acid and protective SPF."

Dermatologist Shari Sperling advises a slow and steady approach. She says, "Retinol is great for both acne and anti-aging, if used in the right amounts and in the right way. Start with a small amount. A green pea-sized amount can be used for the entire face," she says. 'It will be red and flaky for a few weeks, but that's normal. It is important to start slowly and gently to build up tolerance. If you keep at it, you will get much more worthwhile results in the end."

The above is from the experts themselves. Remember, practice (and patience) makes perfect.
