Sustainable Brand AMEN Switches from Plastic to Mushrooms
Celebrate Earth Day and enjoy sustainable (and not to mention gorgeous) candles at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City.
AMEN (opens in new tab), which makes non-paraffin luxury candles, is making strides with regard to sustainable packaging. As opposed to using non-sustainable plastics, AMEN is sticking to biodegradable, shelf-worthy packaging made from mushroom roots. If you've seen "Fantastic Fungi" (open in new tab), you already know that roots, called mycelium, create a network on the forest floor that allows trees and other plants to communicate with each other. It's like nature's Internet.
Uruguayan-born brand founder Rodrigo Garcia wants to show people how a world without plastic is possible: "When plastic was invented in 1907, it was very expensive, When plastic was invented in 1907, it was ridiculously expensive. But cost efficiency has made plastic so inexpensive that it is now impossible to go a day without touching it, and AMEN Mushroom's carbon negative packaging is a manifesto for sharing biodegradable packaging alternatives. As a young brand it was a difficult decision, but we could not have a candle that would take 500 years to decompose after 50 hours of burn time."
AMEN's seven candles are designed around seven charkas. The collection includes rose for the heart, jasmine for the third eye, and my personal favorite, eucalyptus for the throat. all AMEN candles are paraffin-free and handcrafted in Grasse, France. You can see the installation called #MushroomConversations on the 7th floor of Bergdorf Goodman. One piece of advice for those visiting the department store. Right next to the installation, there is a mirror that is perfect for selfies.
