Read MoreIf you, too, have finished reading season one of Shadow and Bone (opens in new tab) and are wondering what's next for Arena and the crows, (opens in new tab) you're in luck: Netflix's hit series is based on Lee Bardugo's popular YA book series, The Grishaverse based on Lee Bardugo's popular YA book series, The Grishaverse. The show's first season is a faithful adaptation of the first Grishaverse book of the same name and follows Alina Starkov as she discovers she possesses the rare power of solar summoning. Alina gets caught up in the world of the magical elite known as the Grisha (opens in new tab) in her home country of Ravka and trains to gain enough power to destroy the Fold (opens in new tab), a realm of darkness filled with monsters that have killed countless Ravkans.
The Grishaverse consists of the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Six of Crows two-parter, the King of Crows two-parter, and three supplemental books; the main storyline of Netflix's "Shadow and Bone" follows the trilogy of the same name, but the "Six of Crows" two-part storyline, but also features characters from the "Six of Crows" trilogy. Bardugo and showrunner Eric Heisserer have written a new plot that weaves the cast of "Six of Crows" into the events of the "Shadow and Bone" trilogy. The show also weaves in details and references from several Grishavers books, including allusions to future story lines. If you can't wait to learn more about this fantasy world, here is the order of the books and what to expect from each.
"Shadow and Bone," published in 2012, sets up the Grishaverse, where Alina discovers she is the legendary Sun Summoner and is trained to destroy the Fold under the Darkling. The book ends at the same point in the series where Alina finds new allies and seeks to continue her training; the second book, "Siege and Storm," begins (literally, in the first chapter) with Alina and Mal being captured by the still-living darkling. With the help of a new character, a pirate named Strumhond, they escape to Os Alta, where Alina becomes the new commander of the second army and continues her search for another amplifier, the sea whip.
The finale of the trilogy, "Ruin and Resurrection," is the final battle between Arena and the darkling over the fate of Ravka. The darkling has taken control of Ravka, leaving Alina weakened and living underground with fanatics who worship her as a saint. Throughout the book, she unravels the secrets of the darkling and searches for the last amplifier, the firebird. The book also focuses on Prince Nikolai, son of the former king and queen of Rabka, who marries Alina and attempts to forge an alliance between Grisha and non-Grisha. The end of the book provides answers to what will happen to the Fold and whether Alina and Mal will be united.
This spin-off series takes place two years after the events of the Shadows and Bones trilogy. It follows Kaz and his team of crows as they attempt a get-rich-quick, world-saving heist on a similar scale to the heist they pulled off in Season 1 of Shadow and Bone. In addition to Kaz, Inay, and Jesper, Nina and Matthias make their first appearances in this film. A sixth crow, Wylan Van Eck, will also appear in the next season of "Shadow and Bone"; "Crooked Kingdom" concludes the crows' storyline. After a failed heist, the crows must work together to save the lives of every grisha and take revenge on those who wronged them.
"Six Ravens" takes place after the events of "Shadows and Bones," but the duology is popular as a stand-alone series. Heisserer liked the duology so much that he fought to have the ravens appear in "Shadow and Bone," a prequel story. Some Grishaverse fans even recommend reading "Six of Crows" first (opens in a new tab).
This duology follows "Crooked Kingdom" as Prince Nikolai, now king of Ravka, struggles to rebuild Ravka and deal with the effects of the darkling's power on Nikolai and Ravka. In "King of Scars," Nikolai, with the help of Zoya, attempts to confront the enemies that stand on his weakened borders and fight the darkness that spreads within him. Nina also makes an appearance, disguising herself as a spy in Fierda and helping to save Grisha. In Rule of Wolves, Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina face their personal demons when Fierda's army invades Ravka. They must work together to save Ravka's future.
There is also a stand-alone supplemental book that tells the history and folk tales of the Grishabas; The Language of Thorns is an illustrated collection of fairy tales that the characters of the Grishabas may have heard as children; The Lives of Saints is also an illustrated book, which The Lives of Saints" is another illustrated book, which tells the stories of the saints of the Grishaverse. Both are excellent introductions to the Grishabad world and its history, but it is recommended that you read several Grishabad books before reading The Lives of the Saints. There is also a journal with writing prompts and quotes related to the Grishaverse called The Severed Moon: if you are interested in writing about this fictional world, A Year-Long Journal of Magic.
As for the possibility of continuing the series, Bardugo told Bustle (opens in new tab) that she has several new Grishaverse stories in mind. While the end of Rule of Wolves opens a very large door, there are many other characters that I found so fascinating that I would love to see them appear on the pages in the book and develop more stories of their own." At least we, and the Netflix show, have plenty of material while we wait.
