This moment has shed new light on these businesses, but great black-owned fashion brands are nothing new. Zelda Barber Wynn Valdez, known as the originator of the first Playboy (opens in new tab) bunny costume, and the only black American designer among the five chosen to represent the United States at the iconic Battle of Versailles (opens in new tab) fashion show Designers like Stephen Burrows (open in new tab) paved the way to success. Entering a new era, the emergence of designers like Christopher John Rogers (open in new tab), Pyer Moss, and Victor Gremaux (open in new tab) continue to defy the status quo through their designs, overcoming challenges.
