24 Hours with Kate Winslet

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?

Superstar Kate Winslet has been trying on new hats lately, most recently playing the titular character in HBO's hit "Meteor in Eastown" (opens in new tab), letting viewers build their own conspiracy board, and as of today, she is the new L'Oreal Paris spokesperson (opens in new tab). Here's how she pulls it all off in one day.

When she is not working, she usually gets up around 6:30 am. Partly because I'm British, but I feel like it's wrong to let the day drag on until I've had my tea. But I don't sit down and enjoy it peacefully. I put the tea down, run around, forget where I put the tea, go back and look for it, realize it's lukewarm, and make another pot. Then I make breakfast for everyone.

As part of my "wake up your face" routine before sending everyone out the door, I always wash my face with cold water and a facial cleanser. Right now, I'm loving L'Oreal's Age Renewal (opens in new tab): it's a great moisturizer. It's quite creamy, but not sticky, and works wonderfully under makeup.

I don't wear makeup during the day, especially unless I have a meeting or event. I keep it really simple. I like my skin to feel like it's breathing, and I like my skin to show through whatever makeup I'm wearing. When I use a little foundation, I like True Match (opens in new tab). There are several different shades that I use all over the place. Which shade I choose depends on my cycle. During them, my skin can look a little hot and irritated, so I'll use a more neutral tone. After that, a couple of coats of my favorite mascara, Voluminous Million Lash (opens in new tab), and a dab of pinkish-nude lipstick (opens in new tab) with my fingers, and I'm good to go.

I love a good eyelash curler. My favorite is from Shu Uemura (opens in new tab) and I've been using it for years. However, I do miss it when it goes missing, even for a day. Every so often, it falls on the floor and gets under something.

I wash my hair every other day, so I usually have a good hair day. Then on the second day, I'm like, hmmm, I'll let my hair down for a day and enjoy it. And then the next day I'm like, "Oh, no. I like to brush my hair up and put it in a high ponytail.

I am in love with the Peloton bike (opens in new tab). We share it with our family and sometimes fight over it; when we were filming Mare of Easttown, it was indispensable. We would sweat, challenge ourselves, and chat with the instructor. Sometimes I even cried; at 45 years old, I have learned that my body is capable of so much more than I ever thought it was capable of.

What's really nice about coming out of the pandemic and closure is that now that I can wear a little makeup again, all of us can feel like armor as we learn to socialize and be out in the world again. A good coat of mascara and a little bit of lipstick is all it takes to say, "Okay. No, I can still go. No, I can still go.

I really love Mare's look in Mare of East Town. It looks like a complete no-makeup look, but I actually added a lot of things. I left some prominent color at the base and added sun spots and dark circles under my eyes. I didn't use a pencil, but actual little fake eyebrows to break up my brows. It's no secret that my eyebrows are crazy gray, but my sisters and I all have them.

But many of us can relate to her look and say, "Oh my God, but she looks so real." I think we often see the TV version of the grieving detective, where she is the one who is the most realistic, and the one who is the most realistic, and the one who is the most realistic. I just wanted her to play the real version, not the TV version. I am proud to say that it seems to have struck a chord with people.

I always remove my makeup, even if I only have a little on, with a warm cleanser or in the shower. I'm actually really good at that. For skincare, I love the Age Perfect Midnight Serum (opens in new tab). It is very moisturizing, but not sticky like serums tend to be. I don't use eye cream much, but now that the climate is changing, I use a little Weleda Skin Food (opens in new tab) when I really need deep hydration.

I always kiss my husband goodnight. We are very good at giving goodnight kisses. I think we often lose sight of that when we are busy or tired.

The last thing I do is put my phone on airplane mode. After 11pm, I get a little worried. Oh, I have so much to do tomorrow. And as I've gotten older, I've come to enjoy sleep and pay more attention to sleep. When I was younger, I would say, "Okay, great. Now I can get up and get on with things in five hours." When I was younger, sleep was a bit of an inconvenience, but now I'm like, "Oh, screw it." So now I try to go to bed between 10:30 and 11:00.
