Katie Sturino just wants to clean out her inbox.
Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?
Look around you: Katie Storino is everywhere. Entrepreneurs posting real, body-positive content like her viral #SuperSizeTheLook series are in your Instagram feed. Megababe, the confidence-oriented beauty brand she founded, could be one (or three) in your medicine cabinet. Her weekly podcast on taboo topics for millennials, "Boob Sweat," is now available on the App Store, and now she's launching a brand new book, "Body Talk," about self-love and success in the face of social denial. Here's how she finds the time to achieve it all (while looking and feeling great).
I usually wake up at 5:50 AM. If I'm not lying, I say I meditate first thing. If I'm not lying, I will say I check my email and Instagram DMs on my phone. I use the My Life app (opens in new tab).
I'm more of a nighttime skin routine person, so I usually just put on my skin at night (in the morning). For makeup, I use Clé de Peau Beauté under eye concealer (opens in new tab) first, and for the last 6-9 months I've been using Stila glitter eyeshadow (opens in new tab). Then I use Saie's Brow Butter (opens in new tab), and I've also been experimenting with Caussus' Air Brow (opens in new tab). For mascara, I go back and forth between Wander Beauty (open in new tab) and GrandeDRAMA (open in new tab) because I like the concept of GrandeDRAMA and it is supposed to help eyelash growth. The whole thing takes me about 3 minutes.
If my hair is dry and clean, I do nothing. But if my hair is dirty, I have to do it all. I don't have a favorite because I've tried multiple shampoos, but the main magic that keeps my hair going is the Dyson Airwrap (opens in new tab). It has changed the way I approach my hair. Before, I had to blow-dry, have the glamour team come in, or go to the dry bar. But now that I have the Airwrap, I can set my hair myself. Because I knew how to do my makeup, but I didn't know how to do my hair.
My work day usually starts around 8:00 a.m. and the team comes in at 9:30. I have to talk to my sister 20 times a day. So I try to organize my inbox before I start, because a lot of things happen during the day that make it difficult to access my inbox. My business partners are all in different time zones, so I usually reply to their stuff in the morning.
I like to do group meditations with my team in the late afternoon, and everyone pretends to like it or actually likes it. I think it's cool, I'm not sure how much time I have to do it. I don't have time. Because we're in the middle of something. But maybe by cherishing the moment, you can calm down for the rest of the day.
Working out is on my list of morning things to do, and I do it about twice a week. I walk my dog in the morning, but I don't call it a workout. I just call it exercise. Personally, I would love to do it one more day a week. I do virtual classes with Obé Fitness (open in new tab) and Megan Roup (open in new tab) and Marnie Alton (open in new tab). I also really like Ankle Weight (open in new tab).
This may sound insane, but I live Body Talk (opens in new tab). My book is my brain on paper. It's funny, when I'm under a lot of stress, I tend to fall back into old habits that make me feel unworthy or not good enough. In the past few days, there have been several moments when I have felt "oh, this doesn't look good" or "I look ugly today." I don't usually have these negative feelings anymore, but they did happen. So I literally went back to the book's guidance and completely turned my thinking upside down, as if to say, "No, it's not."
I mean, isn't everyone's answer Oprah?
Katie Jane Hughes (opens in new tab). Love her tutorials. Love the way she draws her eyebrows. Love her fun makeup. Love it all.
My husband and I watch a lot of TV. I live in New York City, but it seems like I'm stuck in the suburbs, sitting on the couch with my husband and our dog, enjoying the content. The Mare in East Town (opens in new tab) was a depressing show, everything from the weather to the people to the concept. I'm also watching "Cruel Summer," which is also depressing and not that good. I've also watched "Ted Russo" three times.
Skin care is done at the end of the day, around 7:00. I wash my face with Holifrog's Acid Wash (opens in new tab), then I use Goop's Vitamin C Serum (opens in new tab) and La Prairie's Serum (opens in new tab), Moisturizer (opens in new tab), Eye Cream (opens in new tab) I also use the Megababe Le Babe. And I love to put Megababe's Le Touche Mask (opens in new tab) on my face from time to time. It's a facial grade butt mask, and I always use it from head to toe before I shower.
We go to bed very early now, about 9:00 or 9:15, and we look at each other and we're like, "It's time to go to bed." Before, I would have been like, "What is wrong with me?" I used to love working until 10:30 and watching TV until 1:00 am. If I couldn't sleep, I'd go right back to meditating.
