24 hours with beauty icon Violette
Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?
Francophiles and beauty babes alike have been following Violette's (open in new tab) every move for years. The French-born, Brooklyn-based makeup artist and influencer is known for teaching on Youtube (opens in new tab) and Instagram how to achieve the ever-fashionable French girl aesthetic. This year, she founded her own beauty line (opens in new tab) to get there faster. Here's how she gets it all done in a day. [In Ayurveda] while you sleep, the liver processes the toxins in your body and leaves them on your tongue, so you want to make sure you get rid of them and don't swallow them.
I've been really insane the past few months, so I've been trying to eat a good breakfast. That way, if I don't have time to eat lunch, at least I have food in my stomach. I usually have eggs with bread and avocado. I also like to start with fruit. Sometimes I'm not in the mood for salty food, so I'll have granola with coconut yogurt. I am a big fan of matcha. I don't drink coffee, but I love matcha.
After brushing my teeth, I drink a glass of water, wash my face, and take a shower. When I come out, I spray my face and body with Boom Boom Milk (opens in new tab), apply SPF, and then start (my daughter) Ines' routine. [My skin is very sensitive, so I can't use much foundation. So my usual makeup is concealer (opens in new tab), red lipstick (opens in new tab), mascara (opens in new tab), perfume (opens in new tab). Sometimes I don't wear makeup, though, because it's important to learn to be comfortable with my bare face.
I try to wash my hair only twice a week. I have very sensitive hair and skin, so doing so keeps my hair clean. The night before I wash my hair, I apply Boom Boom Milk (opens in new tab) all over my scalp and hair, braid it, and go to bed. The next day I use Aveda shampoo and conditioner (opens in new tab) and my hair and scalp love it. I wear my hair down or in a bun and avoid blow drying. Between shampoos, I put a flange puff (opens in new tab) on my bangs and roots to remove oil and add volume. My hair is fine and needs the help.
Every morning I start my day by meeting with the creative and marketing teams. After that, I have a series of meetings with vendors and various departments within the company. The past few months have been so intense that I felt disconnected from my little creative inner voice. I was very fortunate to be able to take a vacation in Paris. I was reminded that having time to calm down makes my work better. Being with my daughter is very important to me, so I pick her up from school and take care of her until she falls asleep. But I never miss this time with my daughter. My daughter is my muse.
I try to live according to my intuition and get in touch with my emotions. Transcendental Meditation is the most amazing tool for grounding myself. It's really incredible and honestly, it saved me when I was going through a very hard time. It's hard to find time to do it these days, but I want to. Other than that, nature sustains me.
My schedule is so busy that I don't have time to go to the gym, but I try to bike to work every day. I started working out a little more last week. But I don't want to get too excited because I might drop tomorrow.
I have no one I would call an idol. I am inspired by everyone from my closest friends, to people walking down the street, to my team. My vision for my brand is not centered on beauty, but on who they truly are as unique individuals and what they do.
I sometimes put this powder (opens in new tab) in my daughter's bath. It's to soothe and soften her skin. I think it's super chic. It's like giving Cleopatra a bath.
A couple of months to a week before I launched "my line," I would work until I fell asleep. Let's face it, launching a startup company is hard work. I love seeing someone who can make celery juice and perfect avocado toast after yoga in the morning, but for most people, especially me, it's unrealistic.
Three months into the start-up, I was exhausted and mentally drained, and I noticed a drop in productivity. But after I took a week off and had time to relax, I realized how much more inspired I was, how much better my work was, and how much happier my life was. So now I have a super early dinner with my daughter. For the French, 6:30pm is a very early meal. If not, I'm going to make it work. Before, after I had Inez, between work and parenting, I couldn't concentrate on reading. Then I would light candles, play calm music, take a bath, and drink wine.
I double cleanse. I use Purito face oil (opens in new tab). I like it very much. I massage it into my dry skin until all the makeup is dissolved, then I massage it in with water and rinse it off. Then I use a cleansing gel. Right now I use the Glossier one (opens in new tab) and it helps remove dirt and makeup. Then I apply Boom Boom Milk (opens in new tab) all over my face, massage a little, and voila!
I used to go to bed late, but now I fall asleep much earlier, between 10 and 11 PM. The last thing I do is look for my husband's arm.
