Who is Olympic 800-meter star Assing Mou?

During the Tokyo Olympics, we have seen countless young female athletes cement their place as the next generation of Olympic greats: 13-year-old skateboarder Skye Brown, 25-year-old swimmer Simone Manuel, and the U.S. women's gymnastics team, among others. (Open in new tab)Joining the very cool crowd is 800-meter American track runner Assing Moo (pronounced "ar-thing-moo," and pronounced "ar-hing-moo" in the past), who will be competing in the 800-meter sprint. (Opens in new tab) The 19-year-old New Jersey native, who began competing in track and field at age 6, is considered a leading gold medal contender heading into Tuesday's 800-meter final.

Mew grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Trenton Central High School in 2020. (She did not run track on her high school team, however, and chose to race for the Trenton Track Club, where she met her current coach, Al Jennings.) (Opens in new tab) She attended Texas A&M University and majored in kinesiology. As a freshman in college, she set numerous track records, but decided to give up her college diploma to go pro. Nike signed her to a contract and is sponsoring her for these Olympics.

She is one of seven siblings.

Moe is part of a large family: she is the second youngest of seven children. Her parents emigrated from Sudan before she was born. Her parents emigrated from Sudan before she was born, and Moe was born a year later. Her older brother Mar'al runs track at Penn State University.

She holds multiple records.

In the 600-meter event (not an Olympic event) at the 2019 U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships, Moe broke the American women's record. Her time of 1:23.57 is just 0.13 seconds off the world record. She also holds the 8000-meter indoor collegiate and under-20 world records in 1:58.40 and the 800-meter U.S. collegiate record in 1:57.73. She also set the women's 800-meter Olympic trials record. Mew also leads the world in the 400-meter run: she holds the fastest American time in this event for 2021 (open in new tab), which happens to be the fourth fastest time in the world. However, she will not be competing in the Olympic Open 400. However, she was fired up to qualify for the 4×4 meter relay at a post-NCAA press conference. 'I would love to run in the Olympic 4×4. I mean, I think what the Olympic team is looking for is definitely experience. But I have to admit, I've seen a couple of Team USA 4×4 races. I remember watching Allison Felix do a 48 split. And today, I did a 48 split. So. Wink wink, Team USA coaches."

She's a gold medal contender in the 800 meters.

Mai qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a time of 1:56.07. She was dominant in the preliminaries and semi-finals and is considered a strong contender for the gold medal. If she wins the gold medal, it will be the first American gold medal since 1968.

Her pump-up playlist before the race included songs from the Disney Channel.
