Gillian Dempsey's Self-Care Tips for Farm Animals

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?

Jillian Dempsey has a career that every aspiring makeup artist dreams of: beautifying Hollywood A-listers like Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Winslet (opens in new tab) for decades, working on the sets of award-winning film and television She has worked on the sets of shows; in 2014, she launched her eponymous makeup line and quickly became an industry favorite. She then democratized her transformative talents with FYFE Beauty, a tutorial app she launched in 2020. Here is how she perfected it.

I usually wake up around 6 or 6:30 AM and drink coffee first. Then I look at my cell phone and call my husband, who works overseas at a different time. Then I go over my plans for the day with my twin sons (my daughter is in college). Then I work out, shower, have breakfast on the go (a cold MUSH (opens in new tab) or protein bar), and drive to my studio office and FYFE Beauty (opens in new tab) headquarters in Santa Monica.

Exercise is important to my mental health, so I either ride my stationary bike at home or take a toning class (usually barre or sculpt) with my trainer, Cynthia Webb.

Dr. Barbara Sturm's Forming Cleanser (opens in new tab), Sisley's Radiance Forming Cream (opens in new tab), Caudalie's Instant Foaming Cleanser (opens in new tab). Then use an eye mask (opens in new tab), a moisturizer such as Tammy Fender's Celestial Rose Cream (opens in new tab), GOOP's Glow Lotion (opens in new tab) on the rest of the face and neck, and a Gold Bar (opens in new tab). Use for 10 minutes. After the Gold Bar, before applying makeup, use Yonca Paris Dry Skin Toner (open in new tab), Augustinus Bader's The Face Oil (open in new tab), Omorovicza Budapest's Queen of Hungary Mist (open in new tab), Colleen Rothschild's Black Tourmaline Face Primer (open in new tab), and EltaMD's Clear Sunscreen (open in new tab).

Go-to Glam

From my brand, I love Sunny, Petal, and Poppy cheek tints (open in new tab) (layer or just one color). I vary the Lid Tint line depending on what I am wearing. Lid tints take less time to blend on my fingers. I'm addicted to Ruby, Peach, Bronze, Glimmer, and Dew, which I mix with Khol eyeliner (opens in new tab) to create a sultry smudged effect. Next, a quick coat of mascara (I'm currently on the hunt for the best mascara ever) and various lip balms. Then I apply Shu Uemura's Hard Formula eyebrow pencil (opens in a new tab) to my brows and apply a clear brow gel.

Hair Chic

I'm really a wash-and-go kind of girl: I use Virtue (opens in new tab) and Oribe (opens in new tab) styling creams, mousses, and dry texturizing sprays, and do minimal to my hair. As for color, Tracy Cunningham (open in new tab) dyes my hair the best.

I am a good multitasker and can do many things at once. Monday through Friday you can find me working freelance makeup jobs or in my studio office working on my own brand and the FYFE Beauty (opens in new tab) app. We do a lot of shoots for FYFE and I am constantly testing makeup and [products]. Every day is different.

I have a lot of rescued livestock and spending quiet time with them allows me to reflect. I have a deep appreciation and respect for all animals and I feel very connected to them.

Whenever I feel out of balance, I call my mother.

I love British icons, so probably Kate Moss. I am fortunate to work with so many women and I consider them all my beauty muse.

L'Oreal's Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara (opens in new tab).

After I get through the dinner rush, my family usually relaxes by reading or watching their favorite shows. Sometimes I work on a painting, sculpture, or design project. It depends on my mood.

I remove mascara and concealer with makeup remover and switch to an enzyme scrub or foaming cleanser to wash my face. Paul Scherri Eye Contour Corrector Cream (opens in new tab), Retorve Nutrient Face Serum (opens in new tab), Retinol twice a week (there is a lighter version of Shani Darden (opens in new tab)), and moisturizers, Prism Botanics Prism Plump It Up Squalane Oil (opens in new tab), and a mist. And neck cream. I use Natura Bisse neck cream (opens in new tab). Lip balm for night (Nuxe RĂªve de Miel Ultra Nourishing Lip Balm (opens in new tab), Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask (opens in new tab)) and body lotion. Above.

The last thing I do before bed is kiss my family and tell them I love them.
