Read MoreOn July 30, 2021, "The Outer Banks" (opens in new tab) Season 2 (opens in new tab) was released on Netflix and quickly rose to the top of Netflix's most-watched titles. So far, Netflix has yet to announce a third season renewal for the hit show about treasure-hunting teenagers, which is huge. Given the success of "The Outer Banks'" breakout first season and its continued popularity following the release of the second season, not to mention the show's large and loyal fan base (lifetime Pogues), it's only a matter of time before "The Outer Banks" is renewed by Netflix for a third season! It's only a matter of time before Netflix renews "The Outer Banks" for a third season.
However, don't expect a season 3 renewal anytime soon; Netflix tends to wait at least a couple of months after dropping a new season of a show before announcing a renewal for that show.
But the Outer Banks staff is prepared: they plan for the show to last more than five seasons. When asked how many seasons he would like to continue The Outer Banks, Jonas Pate, co-creator and executive producer of The Outer Banks, told Decider (open in new tab) That's my answer. Definitely more than three."
The good news: If "The Outer Banks" is renewed for a third season, the teen drama will likely return soon; Netflix announced production on a second season in July 2020, and Season 2 was available just one year later. Unless the show faces pandemic-related delays, season 3, if renewed, will likely appear in late summer or early fall of 2022.
Spoilers. The "Outer Banks" Season 2 finale left many loose threads to be dealt with in Season 3. For one, the Pogue family escaped from the Camerons' ship and ended up on a deserted island without the treasure. The friends are arguably the worst off during the show and the furthest from the OBX. Despite this, "Outer Banks" co-creators and showrunners Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke told "Entertainment Weekly" (opens in new tab) that the resourceful crew has no intention of giving up the chase for the gold " They're knocked down, but they're not knocked out," Burke said.
The Pogues certainly have a lot to deal with after they made it off the island. Ward and Rafe Cameron made off with both the Royal Merchant gold and the Santo Domingo cross, but the Pogues have the loyalty of Ward's daughter Sarah (who sort of married John B.). In the final scene of the Season 2 finale, Rafe promised his father that he would find Sarah and bring her back to his family. Given Rafe's murderous impulses, another confrontation between him and Pogue is likely to be messy.
There is also the big reveal that John B.'s father, Big John, is still alive and has teamed up with Limbly, the show's new villain. It is not clear what Big John has in mind, other than to have Limbly "save" his son in exchange for the shroud. However, Big John was the reason Pogue started the treasure hunt in the first place, and most of John B's motives were to avenge his dead father. Once Pogue finds out about John B., the whole series will change.
Several members of the cast and crew of The Outer Banks have shared their theories about what season 3 will bring. Josh Pate told EW that the return of Big John will be a big part of it: "The relationship between John B. and his father is a big theme, his father coming back, them eventually reuniting, John B. having to reconcile the ideal image of his dead father with the reality of his living father. There are a lot of father-son themes."
John B. and John B. are not only fathers, but they are also sons and daughters.
For Chase Stokes, who plays John B, the Big John twist and the fact that he may have voluntarily left his son will be a big part of John B's journey. Stokes told TV Line (open in new tab), "It is his choice to leave his son and what it is like." He said, "How is it that a child can come face to face with a parent who left and choose to put him in this situation and not know what happened during that time?
Beyond the central drama of John B., Season 2 also shed light on Pope's familial connection to the Santo Domingo cross, and according to Decider, the Outer Banks creative team will be working with each of them in the upcoming season to create a They hope to give Pogue a major arc throughout the season. Josh Pate told Decider (opens in new tab), "You can't shine a light on everyone all the time. We knew this season was going to be a Pope-heavy season. If we keep going, the spotlight will be on other characters as well.
Although there are plenty of treasure hunt-related cliffhangers set up, the "Outer Banks" showrunners told "Entertainment Weekly" that romance will be a bigger part of season 3, embracing the teen-oriented romance aspect They said that the show will become more of a teen show. Josh Pate said, "It's something we really liked in Season 1, and it's an element that wasn't really explored in Season 2. In Season 3, we were going to have a romance between the characters."
One of the new romances glimpsed in the finale is between Pope and the newest Pogue, Cleo. Carasia Grant, who plays Cleo, told Elite Daily (opens in new tab) that Cleo, who grew up in the Bahamas, will not have an easy transition into Pogue life." I think it will be very difficult for her in the beginning. She won't be able to walk around with a knife in her hand, and it will be uncomfortable. Will she be able to attend school? There's the accent. A lot of things could happen."
Chiara and JJ could be together next season, and Josh Pate told Entertainment Weekly that the creative team was "immediately open" to the two Porgs getting together, but they "kind of put it aside" for season 3 ... Madison Bailey, who plays Chiara, told Cosmopolitan (opens in new tab) that they could be a couple. We're both feisty and always up for crazy ideas," she said. There's something intrinsically common between these two characters, so it could work," she said. [But Chiara and JJ's relationship may not be smooth sailing; Rudy Pankow, who plays JJ, gave Cosmopolitan some hints about how his character might handle it. Pankow said, "If anything, I think being in a relationship will make him more unsure of what he's trying to do."
As for newlyweds John B. and Sarah, Madeline Klein, who plays Sarah, told "Entertainment Tonight" (open in new tab) that the teens are excited to get to know each other more." If there is a season three, it will be really fun to watch them really start to get to know each other in a real way. They are married, but they don't actually know much about each other. I think that would be really fun. They've obviously been through a lot together."
In addition to getting along with her husband, John B., Klein told ELLE (open in new tab) that she hopes Sarah will come into her own in the new Pogue family." I would love to see something like she and John B. just have to work out what happened. I would like to see her develop a personal relationship with her chosen family. Maybe there will be some backstory about her and Key's friendship. I also want to see her try to go to Pogue High School. I also want to see her try to get a job.
