Read MoreMost people who grew up with the Internet have overlooked its dark side. The World Wide Web is a wonderful tool for preserving knowledge, connections, and communities, but it also gives people the chance to be anonymous or live a secret life Netflix's hot new thriller (opens in a new tab) "Clickbait" is an unknown "truth" The viral video that exposes the unknown "truth" examines a situation that turns a family upside down.
The show's topical premise is almost unmissable: father of two Nick Brewer (Adrian Grenier) is kidnapped and a viral video of him is posted online with two signs: "I abuse women" and "I will die if I get 5 million views." Nick's family, including his wife Sophie (Betty Gabriel) and sister Pia (Zoe Kazan), spend the season trying to track down the kidnappers and find out what Nick did that was caught on video.
The eight episodes, which premiered on August 25, have already been torn apart by fans and topped Netflix's most-watched chart just 48 hours after its release.
"Clickbait" spoilers ahead. Viewers who watched through the eight-episode season of "Clickbait" saw its central mystery unraveled once and for all, as Nick's killer was revealed and all loose ends were tied up.
This Netflix hit is considered a limited series, but that hasn't stopped other hugely popular shows from getting second seasons (such as "Big Little Lies"). The fate of this show depends on how long it stays in the Netflix top 10. Other new Netflix shows like Genie and Georgia (open in new tab) spent weeks atop the Netflix charts before being renewed.
Spoiler alert: By the end of eight episodes of Clickbait, we know who killed Nick Brewer. She was discovered by her husband Ed after his colleague Dawn Greed used his likeness for a catfish dating profile. She later shut down the profile and one of the Catfish victims, a woman named Sarah, committed suicide. After Sarah's death, Sarah's brother kidnapped IRL Nick and filmed a video, but was released when it was discovered that he had nothing to do with Sarah's death. IRL Nick then showed up at Dawn's house and was beaten to death by Ed.
We learn all of this in the finale when Nick's son Kai shows up at Dawn's house and discovers that she is involved in Nick's death. After holding a gun to Kai's head for a while, Ed tries to escape and is shot and killed by the cops. Now both Nick and his killer are dead. But Dawn is still around, and a second season may be drawn out to see what she does next with her superior catfishing skills.
Then again, a second season need not necessarily focus on the same cast. Clickbait could become an anthology series like White Lotus, where a new mild-mannered man becomes the subject of a viral murder video. In that case, the way to make an anthology without changing the story would be to change the subject matter of the video. It could be a public figure with a dark secret. Instead of following the victim's family, you could focus on the personal lives of random internet sleuths. Another idea would be to keep Roshan Amiri (Phoenix Raei) as the investigating detective. There are many ways to go with an anthology season.
"Clickbait" may seem like a classic Netflix thriller, but creator Tony Ayers focused on cybercrime, "a new category of crime that has emerged since the Internet came to dominate our lives," murder He designed the film as a mystery. He also told Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab) that the show's creative team decided to base it on a crime that actually happened.
Ayers also said that the change of perspective and character dive in each episode was integral to the series. He said, "The main thing we wanted to do was to give people a roller coaster ride that would engage them, but also have some sort of emotional effect. One of the advantages of this format is that you can get into the lives of the characters in each episode. What we really want is for people to stop and think about the nature of their interactions."
Luckily for us, Ayers intends to continue the season further. He told Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab) that if people like the online whodunit format, he wants to continue. I think it works really well, especially for more sophisticated crimes," he said. We want to satisfy the quality of the whodunit, but at the same time delve deeper into the characters and give a 360-degree view of an event. I have an idea for season two or three."
