Who is Mimi Keane in "Sex Education"?

Netflix's teen comedy Sex Education (opens in new tab) is truly an ensemble piece. The show, which follows the students of Moondale Secondary, zooms in on new kids season after season and even episode after episode, while also spotlighting longtime characters; in Season 3 (opens in new tab), which premiered on September 19, Moondale's fashion Ruby, the obsessed queen bee, gets more screen time while pursuing a casual relationship with now-retired unofficial sex therapist Otis.

British actress Mimi Keane, who has played the mean girl since season one, shines in the new spotlight, giving Ruby a depth that surprises viewers and makes even longtime Maeve and Otis shippers change their minds. She proved to be one of the most underrated talents in the stellar cast of "Sex Education" and an artist to watch.

The 23-year-old actress was born and raised in Hertfordshire, in southern England, and began her acting training early, studying at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London from 2009 to 2014.

Keane got her start as a stage actress, making her professional debut in 2010 as Jenny in the stage production of "Kin" at the Royal Court Theatre. She then made her television debut in 2013 in an episode of the British teen show Sadie J.

Her first regular television role was as Cindy, a troubled teen on the long-running BBC soap opera EastEnders. She appeared on the soap from 2013 to 2015, appearing in 122 episodes. While on this famous soap, she was nominated for a British Soap Opera Award for Best Young Actor and an Inside Soap Award for Best Young Actor.

The actress is an animal lover, and her two small dogs regularly appear on her Instagram. One of them, a light brown dog named Baby, also made his television debut. Keane told Glamour magazine (opens in new tab) that Baby is playing herself in "Sex Education" Season 3.

"She comes with me every season. She brings all her dogs. She even brought her cat before. It's all of them. I always bring animals. I've been trying to give her a role for the last three years. She has some very cute scenes, and Ruby talks to her the same way I talk to other people," she said. Very serious. That's how I talk to them. That's how I do it in my life," she continued.

The cast of Sex Education is tight-knit, and Keane has become friends with several of her co-stars over the past three years. She said in an interview with Glamour that she is especially close with Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric, and Chaneil Kular, who plays Anwar, a member of The Untouchables. Gatwa makes her laugh the most, and she says that he and Kular are among her co-stars with whom she can talk about anything.

Kular told Glamour magazine that her love of dressing up and wearing heels in "very inappropriate places" is common to her role. She added: "It's the same this season. 'It's the same this season. Nobody wears heels to school. The principal wouldn't let me, but I would have if I could have. Besides, we both talk to my dog in real life," she said.

Asked about playing the queen bee, Keane told Teen Vogue (opens in new tab) that Ruby's favorite habit is regularly ruffling her hair and tapping her nails." I don't have them in my real life, but she always has some very long nails, always snapping," she said.

She continued, "During the shoot, the director, Ben Taylor, would say things like, 'Flip your hair, Ruby's hair,' or 'Ruby's nails, also nails. Ruby nails, nails again. Nails in the hair. That's very fun because it's something special for Ruby."
