24 hours with Deepa Buhler-Hosla

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, where Marie Claire takes a peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their respective industries. How do these women get their work done in a day?

Diipa Büller-Khosla has perhaps done the impossible. A South Asian beauty influencer, she has launched indē wild (opens in new tab), a new beauty brand that combines Ayurvedic traditions (opens in new tab) with science-backed ingredients. This means that "modern desi women" can finally listen to the advice they have long been given by their mothers and grandmothers regarding their skin care routines.

"I wanted to create an Indian brand like Tatcha is for beauty in Japan," she said. But it's not just about putting turmeric in your face mask because your mom says it's good for you." It's because science tells us that your mother was right." (Buhler-Hosla's mother, Dr. Sangita Khosla, is an actual dermatologist who serves on the brand's board with Ayurveda practitioner Nidhi Pandya.) She added, "Your mother will look at your beauty counter now and think, 'Finally!'"

Here, Buhler-Hosla shares her brown girl beauty idol, the hair mask her mother whipped up for her, and the self-care ritual she wants the world to adopt.

I go to the gym as soon as my alarm goes off - it's 6:30 am. I get home by 7:30 a.m., around which time my (almost 6-month-old) daughter Dua also wakes up. This new habit of waking up early and going to bed early is definitely due to Dua. Then I take care of her, feed her and play with her. Then I take a shower and get ready for bed. Then I have a smoothie or a cup of coffee to start the day.

When my gynecologist gave me the green light [to start working out again], I loved, loved, loved Pilates and started doing it immediately. I do it twice a week. Three times a week I weight train and once a weekend I do yoga. I try to move my body almost every day, at least once a day.

First, cleanser: ...... I usually use the one from Dermalogica. The only serum I have used in the past year is from indē wild. It has an anti-pollution veil, a blue light filter, ayurvedic superfoods like turmeric and ashwagandha, and hyaluronic acid (among other ingredients). In summer, omit the moisturizer and use a direct moisturizing SPF. In winter, use Augustinus Bader Rich Cream (opens in new tab) and use SPF over it. Currently I use Dr. Barbara Sturm's Sun Drops SPF 50.

On days when I am in front of my laptop, I just use skincare and nothing else. But if I have a little photo shoot here and there or have to be in a video, I wear no makeup. First I apply Ilia's Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40. Then I apply Nudestix multi-purpose product on my lips, cheeks and all over. Then I apply mascara and finish with Benefit's Clear Eyebrow Gel.

I use Dyson's Airwrap (opens in new tab) I style with a little Rahua's Legendary Amazon Oil. For shampoo and conditioner I use a new brand called SEEN. It was created by a dermatologist with skin in mind and many hair care products contain ingredients that irritate the skin. I also use a hair mask every week that my mother makes in bulk. It has a base of sesame oil and coconut oil, fresh hibiscus flowers, ayurvedic powders like amla (gooseberry), fenugreek seeds, and a few other secret ingredients.

Zoe Kravitz, Alicia Keys, and Amal Clooney. I really appreciate women who are willing to show their real skin rather than hide it.

My mother told me to let all my hair down before bed and massage my scalp. She said that would improve blood circulation in my scalp and make my hair grow longer.

L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara

Le Labo AnOther 13. This scent has a mysterious and exotic appeal. It has figs, amber, and a heavier scent [for the cold season].

Meditation, 100 percent. Everyone who knows me knows that I am a big believer in manifestations. They were part of me growing up in India: waking up in the morning, sitting in the living room with my parents, doing breathing exercises, meditating. I also believe that being with friends is a form of self-care, so I try to spend enough time with family and friends on the weekends.

Use micellar water to remove debris and makeup. If I am wearing makeup, I use a deep cleanser like Augustinus Bader. It has great ingredients like Bactiol (opens in new tab) (vegetable retinol). If it is winter and my skin is very dry, I also apply a rich cream from Augustinus Bader.

Dua goes to bed around 7:30 or 8:00. She is like an angel, I don't know why, but she sleeps 12 hours every night without a single cry. I go to bed around 11 or 11:30 PM. Most days, she taps her pillow and goes out to sleep. When I don't, (my husband) Oleg and I love to watch reruns of "The Office" and have a good laugh.
