How and why to use Jade Roller

The world of skin care is endless. Products (opens in new tab), tools (opens in new tab), and information. And I am here to add another tool to your arsenal. What are facial rollers and why do we need them? The jade roller you see on your Instagram feed, that thing is worth it. Jade facial rollers have been used in China since the 17th century to massage the skin," says dermatologist Melissa Kanchanapomi Levin, M.D., a clinical attending at NYU Langone and Mount Sinai Hospital.

Facial rollers have been known to remove toxins from the skin, smooth fine lines, reduce dark circles and under-eye bags, relieve tension headaches, soothe inflammation, cure breakouts, brighten skin, and create an overall sense of "zen." Flat, curved stones are pressed against the face and neck to relax stiff fascia and muscles and drain accumulated lymphatic fluid. The idea is the same as jade facial rolling, but it is a bit stiffer and more difficult to master the proper pressure and movements. The reason why both facial rollers and scrape therapy are stones is that stones are inherently cooling, relieving tension and reducing inflammation.

"Jade rolling and scrape therapy can improve some lymphatic flow in the face and temporarily reduce swelling," says Dr. Levin. If you plan to try jade rolling, the method is simple (as you would hope).

Just roll the jade roller along your face for a calming, meditative moment. Here's how to use the jade roller in two minutes:

"I tend to hold tension in my jaw, so using a tool to relieve the pain caused by that tension is very important in my weekly routine. this little jade roller from Skin Gym (open in new tab) is placed under my cheekbone When pressed in, it vibrates, giving me a sculpted face. The vibrations also make for a nice little massage. "Alexis Gaskin, (opens in new tab) Beauty Writer

"When using facial rollers, I was a bit skeptical about rolling something on my face. But this stainless steel roller from Sacheu (opens in new tab) made me change my mind on the first try. The weight of the device gave more pressure to my face to really plump up my chubby cheeks, and the smaller sides cooled under my eyes. Added bonus: Sacheu is AAPI owned and has a handy guide on how to use the device."

"Jade rollers are nice, but I always needed something a little more, and this weighted tool from Pause Fascia (opens in new tab) is a morning savior that cures my glass-full of swelling. Or even once a month at this time of the month when my face looks a little less lifted than usual. The grips make it easy to glide and roll over any part of the face for a lymphatic drainage massage. It stimulates collagen, blood flow, cell turnover, and elasticity. Afterwards, my skin became sculpted and the natural contours of my face became a little more prominent."

"I have been using this product for over a year now, and I am very happy with the results."

"After eating a mountain of crab dumplings and drinking too much Pinot, the pinching pull of this MDNA skin roller (opens in new tab) is the only thing that gets the puffiness out fast. (Opens in a new tab) The spinning orbs help to channel the toxins in my soy jowl into the lymphatic system, and I can adjust the intensity depending on the angle of the tool. Even better, it massages my jowls just like a pro, which helps me unwind after a long day."

"Cheekbones. A well-defined jawline. Well-formed eyes. It used to have all of these things. That is, until I started spending most of my days and nights chasing around with my toddler (my child). Thankfully, I have the Joanna Czech Facial Massager (opens in new tab). When I'm brewing my morning beverage, I can pull out this facial massager and roll my face, cool it, reduce puffiness, contour it, and get it all moving again. (Joanna recommends seven minutes, but five minutes is enough most mornings.) By the time I finish my second cup, my skin is brighter, tighter, and clearer." It's as if you've slept all night. -Y.C.
