24 hours with Gabi Butler
Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?
Speaking of productivity, some of us would love to have the same 24 hours as Beyonce. Personally, I would jump at the chance to have the same 24 hours as Gabi Butler. The Weber State University cheerleader and star of Netflix's hit documentary "Cheer" (opens in new tab), the highly anticipated second season of which was released on the streaming platform on January 12, somehow manages to fit cheer workouts and self-care into her day She incorporates a full self-care routine. And she does it multiple times each week.
I interviewed Butler and talked to her about all things beauty, from her favorite no-makeup makeup hack (which is genius, by the way) to the face cream she relies on to keep her dry skin in check throughout the winter. Despite being "not as beauty savvy as everyone thinks," Butler definitely had one or two things to share with me. See her tips below.
When I go to practice, I usually don't wear full makeup. So when I get ready for practice, I get out of bed, take a shower, and wake up. I make a pot of coffee before I brush my teeth, and I don't want to go out for coffee after I've brushed my teeth. Then I make my bed and start getting ready.
Honestly, maybe coffee. I'm weird. I used to love breakfast and was a super glutton. But now, coffee calms me down. Coffee may not be healthy, but it fills me up quickly and I'm fine until I get hungry.
If it's a practice day, I'll trim my eyebrows. I'd curl my lashes and put on some Vaseline (opens in new tab), like clear mascara. That's the end of practice for the day.
On the day you actually get ready, start with your face. I don't use a lot of foundation or powder. I don't use a lot of foundation or powder or anything like that. So I don't wear anything except blush. If I have dark circles under my eyes, I put a little concealer or powder. But usually, I just put a little blush depending on the day. Then I do my eyebrows, curl my lashes, and apply mascara.
I do the cat eye look. Basically, I put eyeliner inwards and wing out my eyes to make it look like a cat eye. People love that look. I'm really good at that makeup too, so that's my staple. It's very mysterious and it looks really nice.
I use a Revlon curling iron. Not the kind that clamps on or has a button on the end, but the kind that looks like a wand. I use the thicker ones. I personally like big curls. I feel like it makes me look prettier.
I love the Naked palette. I think it has a great variety of colors. I love how they hold up on the eyes. Some eyeshadows fall off throughout the day, but the Naked Palette sticks to me like glue. All the colors are so beautiful and they really pop.
I don't know the exact name, but I have the Naked glow kit. It has one sparkle in it, and it has glitter in it.
I like Revlon eyeliners (opens in new tab). I have a lot of eyeliners, especially Revlon. I think they are really good eyeliners and they come in a variety of colors.
I bought a new perfume, I don't know what it's called, it's a gold bottle. My friend was wearing it and she said, "Oh my God, what is that smell? It's Dubai perfume. " And I said, "I need that." So I don't know the name of that perfume, but I'll show you on my Instagram.
But other than that, my favorite perfume is Bath and Body Works. Literally, I could go there and just have a field day. They just released a cashmere perfume and I really love it. Anything sweet and feminine. I love scents like that.
My workout regimen right now is basically going to the gym, sometimes I go to the gym twice a day, and I go for an hour and a half to two hours each time, so I'm in the gym a lot. I'm a workout fanatic. I do stunts, I do anything related to cheerleading. There is no better workout than cheer training. If you do even one cheer practice, you're like, "Wow. Wow, I use so many of my muscles." But stunting, although it's not a workout for me, it's another workout that I do.
After practice, I love to go get a Swig drink. I'm in Utah, so it's a West Coast tradition. So after practice I go get a drink. And then I come home, and honestly, going home is a way for me to unwind and spend time with the people that I love and really care about. It makes me feel relaxed and calm.
Some of the best cosmetics I have are from Walmart (open in new tab). I am not kidding. Everyone says, "I went to Ulta (opens in new tab)." I feel like I'm spending so much money going there; I bought two things for $60. But when I go to Walmart or Target (opens in new tab), I spend $60 on 20 things.
I'm not as into beauty as everyone thinks I am, but maybe Kat Von D. I'm not sure. I don't know if it counts, but I love Jhené Aiko. I love her vibe, the way she dresses, the way she does her makeup. She can have a totally different look someday, but it's so natural. Really like her.
I've been thinking, I'm not going to support her forever, and one day it will come to an end. But I really want to still be active. I'm also thinking about becoming a dancer. Cheerleading is very demanding and very physical, but dancing, I mean hip-hop dancing and dancing in general, is a great thing for me because I love dancing so much. When I'm in the mood to dance, I feel like I can be very good at it.
At night, I try to keep my face moisturized, I apply night serum and try not to dry it out. It's very dry here [in Utah] compared to Florida. There is no humidity, so my skin is much drier. I don't want to get wrinkles while I'm young, so moisturizing is the most important thing. My grandmother is 81 years old and she is very healthy. So I'm hoping she'll pass that on to me.
I use a lot of First Aid Beauty (open in new tab). They sent me a lot of really great stuff. I use this Ultra Repair Cream (opens in new tab) at night. It moisturizes so much. I use a lot of their products. I also use Neutrogena wipes (opens in new tab).
I guess what calms me down is putting on a movie and cuddling with my boyfriend to relax. I'm very busy and hectic during the day, so I try to check in on my friends as soon as I'm done running errands. I think the best way to relax is to watch a movie or something. I think that's the best.
