Read MoreIt's safe to say that "Yellowjackets" is taking the Internet by storm. The hit thriller series has created a rabid following during its wildly successful first season, and Reddit threads and Discords are full of theories. It's also one of the best new shows of the year, reintroducing our favorite 90s actresses through a show that has it all: survival scenes, psychological drama, exploration of teenage girlhood, and the perfect punk soundtrack.
For those who haven't yet taken advantage of Showtime's free trial, "Yellowjackets" follows a high school soccer team whose plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness on its way to a national tournament. through two timelines, the teens spend 19 months in the wilderness Through two timelines, the film depicts the immediate aftermath of the crash as the teens survive 19 months in the wilderness, and the lives of the survivors 25 years later as they continue to struggle with the trauma.
The final episode of Season 1 aired on January 16, but for fans with theories past this season, Showtime has already scheduled another episode. What is currently known about Season 2 is as follows.
Fortunately, Showtime did not keep us waiting for renewal news. Thanks to the show's growing fan base (and 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating), "Yellowjackets" was renewed last month in the middle of its first season. Upon the announcement, Showtime president of entertainment Gary Levine told Deadline that the thriller is one of the network's biggest hits.
"It's the second-biggest streaming series debut ever, with double-digit weekly growth in streaming. 'The show has truly exploded, both in terms of critics, in terms of buzz, and in terms of solid numbers. To be embraced so quickly and so deeply by both viewers and critics alike is like catching lightning in a bottle.
Thanks in part to the buzz, Showtime will soon begin pre-production on Season 2, and Levine told Deadline that the writers' room will begin work this month.
"I haven't heard the pitch for Season 2 yet, and the writers room hasn't gotten together yet. I think Ashley, Bart, and Jonathan have loose ideas, but they haven't fleshed out their ideas and haven't shared them with us."
Levine also revealed that the show may be back sooner than anyone thought, telling Vulture (opens in new tab) that the network plans to bring the show back this year.
"We're working toward a late 2022 premiere," Levine said. 'We want to continue on an annual cycle. I think the audience deserves it, and when you have a show with this kind of momentum, you don't want it to disappear."
"We're looking at a lot of people who are interested in the show," he said.
On the show's trajectory, creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson spoke to The Hollywood Reporter's "TV's Top 5" podcast. They also discussed one of the show's influences, William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies.
"'Lord of the Flies' is about how socialization is falling apart and how society is a sham. Girls learn early on how to make people like them and what social hierarchy is." It is more interesting when things fall apart. Masks become even thicker. There are many more layers of preconceived notions of how one should behave and act."
[24One of the best things about Yellowjackets is that you literally don't know what is going to happen by the minute. The story is set up so that each timeline reveals a little more about the team and the survivors. Expect Season 2 to continue to surprise, but that also means it's hard to guess what new episodes will be. Will there be more pre-crash flashbacks? Will there be new survivors?" and "Will something supernatural come to light in the modern timeline?"
This also means that it is difficult to determine who in the cast will return for Season 2.
This also means not knowing who in the cast will return for Season 2. Assuming the dual storylines continue, it is very likely that the adult and teen versions of Shawna, Taissa, Natalie, and Misty will return (and we will be sad if they don't). As for everyone else, after the events of the season 1 finale, we will definitely be spending more time with teenagers Lottie and Van.
Many of our questions and fan theories live on past the season 1 finale. 'Because I personally get very frustrated with shows that drag everything out forever and never answer anything. So I wanted to answer some questions and ask some new ones."
As of the final episode of Season 1, the teens were far from out of the wilderness, winter was fast approaching, and their last attempt was in flames. We also don't know how close the girls are to the scene at the beginning of the show, and seeing as how they may have spent two winters in the wild, they may not become full cannibals in a bit. Given that, the theory of who survived besides the main foursome may just have time to fester between seasons.
With the second season yet to be written, the cast is as much in the dark as we are. Well, maybe not as much darkness. The incomparable Melanie Linsky, who plays Shauna, said that when she was approached about the show, she asked where the story was headed. She told Collider, ". 'You can write a cool pilot and have a cool idea, but not know where to take it. That was my concern. I just thought, 'Oh my gosh, I hope they know they have to figure out a lot of characters and a lot of plots.'"
Meanwhile, Steven Krueger, who plays Ben Coach, believes that his and Nat's friendship in the wilderness will continue in season two. 'Neither one of us really fits in with life on the surface,' he said. I have no idea what's going to happen next season. I have no idea what's going to happen next season, but I think that's going to be a plot point for the future.
Creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson have given further hints about the show's wilderness story trajectory; in an interview with Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab), the husband-and-wife team said that Nickerson " reaffirmed the story's connection to the events of the cannibalism scene in the series premiere, which he called "a bit of a climax, but not the end.
"Throughout the series, we definitely get to that part of the story. 'That said, the exact nature of what is happening there is ideally mysterious, and it raises some questions for the viewer, which we can eventually answer. So we would ideally answer both: how did they get there, and what exactly was it that we were seeing in that opening scene?
