9 pea coats to add to your seasonal wardrobe
Warm, dependable, and durable, the double-breasted peacoat is more than just the best jacket for ocean-going sailors. Today, this silhouette has become a classic and fashionable addition to the modern woman's wardrobe. You will be impressed by a silhouette that can be worn beautifully by anyone of any frame. Here, we spoke with fashion historian Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell about iconic menswear jacket styles that are perfect for your outerwear needs.
Marie Claire: Where did the pea coat originate?
Kimberly Christman-Campbell: The peacoat was first worn by sailors in the 18th century, and the name is said to come from the Dutch word pije, meaning warm, water-resistant, thick, coarse wool fabric. It was later adopted by the British, French, and American navies.
MC: When did this style first become accepted by women?
KCC: Yves Saint Laurent was one of the biggest proponents of the menswear-inspired style, introducing the peacoat in the first collection of his line in 1962. Famous peacoat wearers include Jackie Onassis and Jane Birkin.
MC: What makes the peacoat modern?
KCC: Flap pockets instead of welt pockets, longer hourglass silhouettes, hoods and belts. Traditional peacoats are form-fitting. However, boxy, oversized peacoats were popular in the 1980s and more recently in the late 2010s. Peacoats have never gone out of style and have had periods of increased popularity.
