Inventing Anna" Casting Guide

Scam season is upon us, and several shows and movies about notorious scammers will be streaming in the coming months; first on Netflix will be the Tinder Swindler documentary, as well as Shondaland's drama, New York's Inventing Anna, about Anna Delvey, who tried to swindle millions of dollars from banks and high society.

Based on a viral article (opens in new tab), the drama stars Julia Garner as the titular con artist and Anna Chlumsky as the journalist who uncovers her story. As the show was produced by Shonda Rhimes, it features many familiar actors from "Grey's Anatomy" and "Shondaland". Here is a look at that stellar cast.

To friends and fans, Anna Delvey (née Sorokin) is a perfectly groomed German heiress who dreams of opening an ultra-exclusive social club. The only problem is that she doesn't actually have any money. Garner is best known for her role as Ruth in Netflix's Ozark, for which she won two Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actress. She has also appeared in the indie film "The Assistant" and in the series "Waco," "The Americans," and "Dirty John."

Feature writer Vivian Kent is determined to rebuild her career after past scandals. She is also pregnant and rushes to complete Anna Delvey's story before the birth of her child; she appeared for seven seasons as Selina Meyer's chief strategist Amy Brookheimer in the HBO comedy Veep. She has also appeared in "Halt and Catch Fire" and "Hannibal".

Todd Spodek is Anna's determined, long-suffering lawyer who concentrates on cases at the expense of his own and his wife's happiness. Moayed is best known for his portrayal of the scene-stealing Stewie Hosseini, Kendall Roy's nemesis, in the HBO hit "Succession." He has also appeared in the blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home and the romantic comedy series Love Life.

Neff meets Anna when the socialite checks into her hotel, and the concierge and the con artist quickly become friends. Neff stays by Anna's side throughout the trial. Floyd is an up-and-coming star, best known for her role as Tia Clayton in the Freeform drama Bold Type.

Rachel is an assistant to a magazine editor who befriends Anna. She is handed the bill for a lavish trip to Morocco and sees the bad side of the con artist. Rose played Quinn Perkins, who became a mysterious hired hand, fugitive, and gladiator during the run of Scandal. She has also worked as a voice actor in many Disney films, including Zootopia, Wreck-It-Ralph, Big Hero 6, and Anna and the Snow Queen.

Casey Duke is Starr's personal trainer and became friends with Anna after making her a client. She also sees through Ana's scam and forms a deep friendship with Rachel. Cox is a four-time Emmy nominee for her role as Sophia Berset in Netflix's Orange is the New Black. The groundbreaking actress is also the award-winning producer of the MTV documentary Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word.

Anna's back-and-forth boyfriend, Chase, is a tech entrepreneur who has been known to con and be conned by con artists. Usmani is also from Succession and has appeared in the What/If series and Katie Keen. She will next appear in the film adaptation of the science fiction novel The Three-Body Problem.

Upper East Side philanthropist Nora, an investor in Chase's app, gets caught up in Anna's scam through Chase. She then introduces Anna to many influential connections. Burton had iconic roles in both "Grey's Anatomy" and "Scandal" as Meredith Grey's mother, Dr. Elise Grey, and Vice President Sally Langston, respectively. She has also been cast in another con artist series, Hulu's Elizabeth Holmes biopic The Dropout.

Talia is another friend of Anna's who gets caught up in the scam and is deeply confused after the con artist "borrows" her friend's yacht. Dominczyk played hospital consultant Dr. Eliza Minnick in "The Glades" and has also appeared in "Whiskey Cavalier," "Brothers & Sisters," and "North Shore."

Maude is one of Vivian's colleagues at Scrivener, a group of writers largely forgotten by the rest of the newsroom, all sucked into the fascinating Anna Delvey story. Smith is a respected actress and playwright who played court clerk Tina Christman alongside Lije-Jean Page in the short-lived Shondaland drama For the People; she is also well known for her role as Bow's mother in Black-ish; and she is a member of the "Black-ish" cast of "The Newsroom" and "The Newsroom" as well.

Another supporting member of the Scribes, Lou, is played by Shondaland favorite Jeff Perry. He played Meredith's estranged father Thatcher in "The Glades" and the corrupt chief strategist Cyrus Bean in "Scandal." Perry co-starred with his own daughter Zoe Perry in season 6 of Scandal, playing the enigmatic villain Samantha.

Even as Vivienne becomes obsessed with her story and fills the walls of her children's room with story notes, her supportive husband Jack is by her side. Holm, a first-time participant in Shondaland, is best known for playing Mindy Kaling's boyfriend in The Mindy Project and is one of the main trio in Comedy Central's Workaholics.

Todd also has a supportive wife named Mags, but she is not tolerant of Anna's trial controlling her husband's life. Fans of "Succession" may be pleasantly confused to see Roman's girlfriend Tabitha cuddling with Stewie (although I can see how that would happen). Fitzgerald has also appeared in the dramas Station Eleven, Sweet Bitter, Unreal, and Masters of Sex (and three episodes of the first Gossip Girl).

The no-nonsense prosecutor on Anna's case is played by Rebecca Henderson. She has recently appeared in cult favorites such as HBO's "Russian Doll" and Freeform's "Single Drunk Female". Fun fact: Her first credited role was voicing a character in the video game Grand Theft Auto IV.

In another fun appearance by the "Scandal" star, Talia's venture capitalist friend was played by Joshua Malina. Marina played David Rosen, a White Hat who rose from Assistant U.S. Attorney to Attorney General throughout the show, and who has bounced back and forth between friend and foe of Olivia Pope throughout.

The judge in Anna's case is another Shondaland favorite. On Grey's Anatomy, Mooney plays Evelyn, Owen Hunt's insensitive mother, and has been on and off the show since 2008. She also played Supreme Court Justice Verna Thornton, who joined Fitz's campaign and helped cover up the Defiance scandal. (Spoiler alert: Fitz choked her to death after learning about Defiance.)

The show's version of Billy McFarland, the mastermind behind the Fire Festival, is played by Ben Rapaport. The familiar actor, a departure from his role as a con man in For the People, plays Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth Oliver; he has also appeared in Mr. Robot, Younger, and The Good Wife; he was a member of the "The Good Wife" cast, and was a member of the "The Good Wife" cast, and was a member of the "The Good Wife" cast.
