Will there be a "Pieces of Her" Season 2?

Netflix's latest thriller is an intriguing family tale based on the question, "What if your mother wasn't who you thought she was?" Based on author Karin Slaughter's 2018 novel of the same name, the eight-episode show follows mother Laura (Toni Collette of "Hereditary") as she takes down an armed man at a local diner, and her devoted daughter Andi ("Fifty Shades Darker") who discovers she has combat skills ), who discovers that she is capable of fighting. When mysterious men target both women, Andi must outwit the thugs and unravel her mother's and her own past.

The suspenseful series has been a huge hit, holding the #1 spot on Netflix's rankings for a week; it debuted at #1 on Netflix's Top 10; and it's now on Netflix's Top 10 list. Fans are hooked on its twist ending and are wondering if there will be another season. Here is everything we know about a possible "Pieces of Her" Season 2.

"Pieces of Her" season 1 spoilers ahead. Throughout the season, Laura Oliver's (Colette) true identity is revealed to be Jane Queller, a former concert pianist who fell in love with a cult leader named Nick. When the cult's plan goes awry and her father is shot, Jane enters witness shelter instead of tipping off the cult and Nick, who is also Andy's father. In the final episode, the girls meet Nick. Nick was looking for money and a tape that would expose the guilt of Laura's brother Jasper for his involvement in their father's accidental death.

Andy and Laura eventually let Nick go and burn down the cabin as if the tapes and money (over $200,000) had been destroyed. Nick is arrested by the FBI and that is the last we see of him. But while all this time it has been assumed that Nick and Jasper were the ones who instigated Martin Queller's death, Andy realizes that the mastermind was actually his mother. Jane at the time, now Laura, orchestrated her father's death after the millionaire tried to terminate her pregnancy. And thanks to a bug in Andy's phone, Jasper had blackmailed her for Laura's role in Martin's death, trapping her and Andy in a web of corruption from which the elder had long ago escaped.

So far, there has been no official announcement from Netflix regarding season two. The streaming giant tends to take a while to announce renewals, even if the show is a big hit. And while "Pieces of Her" may not have the numbers of Bridgerton or Squid Game at the moment, Netflix's self-reported statistics show that it had 53 million hours of viewing worldwide as of March 10 (open in new tab). Judging by the change from the book ending to the show's ending, the production is probably planning for a possible extension.

The Netflix show follows the same timeline and nearly the same plot as Slaughter's original novel, but the two endings are very different. The main story ends with a standoff between Nick and Laura, Laura is bugged, Nick is framed, and the cult leader is put in jail while Laura and Andy return to their former lives. With Nick's fate hanging in the balance and Jasper threatening Laura, there are several possibilities for the story to continue beyond the original book, as the show's ending is more open-ended.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (open in new tab), "Pieces of Her" showrunner (and new "Morning Show" season 3 showrunner) Charlotte Stout considers renewing the series.

"I think it started as a limited and at some point the decision was made to make it a series, I think it was a Netflix decision, but certainly there's a lot more to tell and we intentionally started making it a little bit more. We tried to be open about it because if it found an audience, it might get some limelight," she said.

As for Season 2, most of the cast members seem to be keeping their mouths shut, but several have said they are interested in what their characters will do next. Heathcote told PopSugar (opens in new tab) that now that she knows the truth about Laura, she is interested in exploring her new relationship with Andy's mother.

Colette, her TV mom, added, "I don't think [a season 2] is impossible. In Laura's case, at the end of the story, she finally has the freedom to be her true self, and then she gets a phone call and immediately everything is taken away from her. I was only free for a short time. I want to see what happens there and how she regains the freedom that she could literally taste for three hours before it was taken away again."

Jacob Scipio, who plays Michael Vargas, Andy's love interest, told the outlet, "We are only seeing the beginning of Mike Vargas. At the end, he is like a dog with a bone, facing DC. If he senses any kind of injustice, wrongdoing, or amusement, he will want to figure it out. The word "Vargas" means "steep hill," and that's exactly what life has been like for him. It's either a long, hard climb or a slide down. Either way, there is no summit in sight. His life is a struggle, and he is ready to fight." [Regarding Andy and Michael's "will-they-or-won't-they" status, the actor added. 'They have a very complicated relationship. They have a very complicated relationship." When people go through trauma together, there is an unbreakable bond that lasts forever." "No matter what path they take, whether it is divergent or connected"
