Why Lin-Manuel Miranda will not attend tonight's Academy Awards

It's Oscar night, and there is no shortage of buzz in the world of celebrity, film, and culture. The film, "Encanto," for which he wrote the screenplay, and "Tick, Tick.... .Boom! Encanto" and its music, including "Dos Oruguitas," which was nominated for Best Original Song, were immensely popular, and given that it was Miranda's first all-Spanish song, it was an especially important night for the multi-talented artist. Jonathan Larson's biopic "tick, tick.... .Boom!" is Miranda's directorial debut and has been a huge success, especially among Broadway and "Rent" fans like myself.

Miranda flew all the way to Hollywood to attend this weekend's awards ceremony, but announced yesterday that her wife, Vanessa Nadal, has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be unable to attend.

"She is fine," he tweeted. 'But as a precaution, I'm not going to the Oscars tomorrow night. I will be supporting my TickTickBoom and Encanto family, along with my own family, along with all of you."

While this year's Oscars ceremony was the most "normal" (read: no COVID) since 2019, it is clear that the threat of disease still looms over Hollywood. Here's to a healthy crowd and a full house next year.
