Beyoncé's colorist reveals the secret behind Beyoncé's Oscar-winning hair.
You weren't the only one who was riveted by Beyonce's performance at the 2022 Academy Awards. Wearing a lime green dress and accessories for her performance of "Be Alive," Beyoncé wore her straight hair in a mid-part and her coloring started with brown on her scalp and gradually lightened as it moved down to her shoulders. So we visited celebrity colorist Rita Hazan, who worked on Beyoncé's look, to find out how we too can achieve this angelic look.
"This look is actually a bit more natural because of the multi-layered highlights," says Hazan. The facial structure and the hair on the top of the head seem to be naturally lightened by the sun," says Hazan. Whether the hair is natural or pin-straight, as in last night's performance, this shadow highlighting technique looks very natural, regardless of the texture."
I'm trying to figure out how to make it look like this in the sun this summer. "First, Hazan lightened Beyonce's base to a toffee blonde color. Next, she concentrated on adding bright, sun-kissed highlights in ribbons all over, framing her face and ends. 'I ended up highlighting other parts of her hair as well, but I added some very unique ones,' she says. 'You couldn't see it in the act, but she had her hair in a ponytail, so I put some ribbon-like highlights under it to suggest a more inclusive, sophisticated, yet edgy style.'
"The shadow highlight trend will be all the rage this spring and early summer. If done right, it's a shading technique that anyone can do, and it works on brunettes and redheads as well as blondes."
If you're thinking of trying this style at home, think again. Hazan suggests leaving hair coloring to the professionals. Don't lighten your hair at home," she says. If you're going to recreate this look, take it to a professional who knows how to work with blondes."
