Read MoreGood news for us, bad news for Joe Goldberg's body count: a fourth season of "You" is coming to Netflix. Days before the third season of this hit psycho-thriller (opens in new tab) hits viewers' queues in October 2021, the streaming giant announced that "You" will return as Season 4.
The show's creators, Sera Gamble and Greg Berlanti, celebrated the news in a statement to Deadline (opens in new tab)." It has been thrilling to watch Penn (Badgley) bring Joe to life in such a creepy yet compelling way, and we are so grateful that Netflix has shown such tremendous support for You, and that people around the world have enjoyed watching Joe truly take it all wrong over the past three seasons! We are deeply grateful for that," said Gamble, adding, "The entire You team is excited to explore a new darker side of love in Season 4."
While the trailer is still to be released, Netflix has released a teaser for the fourth season featuring old footage and tagged with the clever play on words, "4 you."
Spoilers for "You" Season 3. "You" is defined by its degree-obscuring, unbelievable, and often improbable twists and turns. So it would be foolish to predict what awaits us in Season 4: Joe staging his own death (at the hands of his wife Love Quinn, played by Victoria Pedretti), murdering his wife Love, leaving their child Henry literally on their doorstep - albeit, to be adopted by better parents - and flees to Paris in search of Marienne.
Will he eventually be caught? In an interview, Sera Gamble hints that Joe may one day pay for his crimes. 'We like to think about the possibility of his punishment,' she told E Should he be killed? He should go to jail."
In an interview with Collider, Badgley said: "The next season could be quite different. I don't know, but it might be more in-depth about Joe's relationship with himself. Because it's not a show about a murderer, it's a show about the mistakes people make in relationships that are taken to the extreme for the sake of a good story. We really need to throw down the sword and stop competing in relationships, which is very difficult."
In an interview with E., Sera Gamble noted that in the fourth season, Joe will have to deal with the emotional consequences of abandoning Henry." I think it's going to shape him from this moment on. And even his exact plan of when and if he will return for his son will be something [the writers] will get together to discuss"
.
Considering that the show has been set in New York (season 1), Los Angeles (season 2), and Madre Linda (season 3) each season, it is safe to assume that the fourth season will see the protagonist terrorizing the residents of the city of love. How do you say "run" in French?
The cast roster has been filling up in recent months, with more than a dozen actors joining Joe Goldberg's orbit. White Lotus actor Lucas Gage will play Adam, an American expatriate and entrepreneur trying to live up to the expectations of his big shot father. Charlotte Ritchie of "Call the Midwife" and "Feel Good" plays Kate, a woman who is loyal to her friends but "cold" to everyone else.
Other cast members include Tilly Keeper as Lady Phoebe, an influencer socialite who is best friends with Kate and dating Adam; Amy Ray Hickman as Nadia, an outspoken lit major who is trying to move on from her past mistakes; and the best-selling Ed Peelers as Reese, a writer whose bestselling memoir launched his political career.
Other characters include investors, professors, aristocrats, investigators, and even a paparazzi photographer. This season promises to be very interesting.
At the end of Season 3, it was announced that Joe (Penn Badgley) was alive and well. And since Love Quinn was blown away by Joe in the Season 3 finale, it is unlikely that she will return for another episode. Victoria Pedretti said in an interview with Marie Claire magazine, "As far as I know, she's dead."
While Pedretti has not spoken with the showrunners or writers about reprising her role in flashbacks or in any other capacity, she is absolutely open to the idea. She said, "I love the show and the people I work with. The character is great. So I'm certainly interested. But I'm just trying to come to terms with the fact that it's over."
As for Tati Gabriel (open in new tab), who played Marienne, an artist/librarian and the object of Joe's season 3 obsession, things are less conclusive. Season 3 ended with Marienne fleeing Love's violent tendencies in the nick of time while heeding her advice to leave Madre Linda and never look back; in an interview with Marie Claire magazine, Gabrielle wondered if she had been cast for the next season, She could neither confirm nor deny. So I'll have to ask Netflix," she said. She did, however, posit a theory that her character fled California with her daughter Juliette.
"I think she's in France, as I'm talking to Joe. I hope she finds the peace she's been looking for." To do art and to let her children have the most free and wonderful life and they will be happy."
The big question: Badgley told TV Line: "I don't think Joe will change. It's a huge hurdle for someone who is so seriously ill, mentally disturbed, traumatized, and violent to heal and change. I don't know if that is possible for someone who has fallen that far."
Two weeks after filming began in late March, Netflix revealed the European city that would be Joe's new home (open in new tab). Season 4 will be set in London, not the "City of Love," and the streamer teased it with a reading list filled with Charles Dickens and Sherlock Holmes. The cryptic Instagram caption reads. If his choice of books tells us anything... Our boy may not be in Paris anymore."
.
The big question. To find out the answer, let's look back at past seasons: the third season was released on October 15, 2021, and the second season was released almost two years earlier, on December 26, 2019. The first season was released just 15 months earlier, on September 9, 2018. So we can imagine that the fourth season will be released between one and two years after the release of the third season. That would mean between October 2022 and October 2023.
