Read MoreNetflix's "Ginny & Georgia" could have been an excuse for a "Gilmore Girls"-style TV show, a gentle mother-daughter drama (open in new tab) made to be easy to watch and digest for its life lessons. Instead, showrunner Debra J. Fisher and creator Sarah Lampert have packed the series in. The main characters are one after the other in a series of love affairs, various deceptions, new friendships, mayoral elections, and even crimes. In short, Ginny & Georgia is half thriller, half coming-of-age story, with (opens in new tab) comedy interspersed between the serious moments. (opens in new tab) It's a grab bag of goodies, and there really is something for everyone.
Season 1 began with the main characters in crisis. A series of unfortunate events have kept the family moving for over a decade, but Georgia Miller (Brian Howie), a wily 30-year-old single mother, along with her alienated 15-year-old daughter Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and 9-year-old son Austin (Diesel LaTraka) decide to settle down in New England. The ten episodes of the first season explored the fissures in Ginny's relationship with her secretive mother and Ginny's first steps into friendship and romance, while addressing issues of race, class, and identity.
Yes, on April 19, 2021, Netflix confirmed that "Ginny & Georgia" had been renewed for a second season. In a statement to Variety (opens in new tab), Debra J. Fisher, creator of "Ginny & Georgia," said, "We are so grateful for the amazing response and love you have shown to 'Ginny & Georgia. We can't wait to return to Wellesbury for Season 2."
In terms of overwhelming popularity, "Ginny & Georgia" was destined to be selected for a second season. This was despite the various critical reactions to the show (open in new tab), especially considering that Taylor Swift took aim (open in new tab) at a sexist joke about her. The line was widely condemned, but it is clear that fans were hooked on the show anyway.
In May 2021, at the MTV Awards, Gentry gave the press a preview of what would happen (open in new tab) in the second season. It's like a roller coaster ride. It's going to be full of excitement and plot and craziness," she said.
Unfortunately, the second season is not coming as soon as fans had hoped: despite being renewed in April 2021, What's On Netflix reports that filming for season two did not begin until November 2021. In mid-October 2021, the show's Instagram page read, "Preparing to shoot season 2: ...... (open in new tab), which shared a "sneak peek at the filming of Season 1, Episode 1. However, as of March 2022, the show was still filming, according to the show's Instagram page." Season 2 is now filming, thanks to everyone who watched." It was written.
So when can we expect to see season 2 on Netflix? What's on Netflix initially reported that "current best estimate is that Ginny & Georgia Season 2 will come to Netflix in mid to late 2022," but given that filming was not set to begin until spring 2022, it could be even later.
The first season ended up being full of cliffhangers. Did Ginny and Austin really escape? What is going on in Ginny and Marcus' relationship? Speaking of love, will Georgia and the mayor's wedding really happen? Plus, Georgia is getting closer and closer to going to jail.
Thankfully, there is one answer: in an interview with TV Line (opens in new tab), Gentry cleared up any confusion about Ginny's destination. 'As she's packing her bag, she picks up the book that Zion gave her. When Zion arrives and is handing her the book, if you look carefully you will see that he has written down the address. If you were watching carefully when Zion arrives and is handing her the book, you would see that he has written an address on it. He has written a secret coded message there and she will know that it is the address of his apartment in Boston. So I think it's pretty reasonable to think that Ginny might be headed to Zion."
The finale also set up Austin's father's return in season 2. But we don't really know what Austin is doing out of school. And we also know that Ginny mailed Austin's letter to his father. Ginny asks, "Did you write down our address?"
demands Ginny, but this storyline gets buried in all the other events that happen in the last episode, well, everything else.
Scott Porter, who plays Mayor Paul, told HollywoodLife that there may be more to his straightforward character than meets the eye: (opens in new tab) "With Mayor Paul, because of what he says in the show, where he comes from I had questions from day one about where he was coming from. He went to Brown University. He received an Ivy League education and left it all behind to travel abroad, backpack, teach English, and develop a very different sense of the world than many who try to rush their way into politics. But when he returned home, he did it magically. What drives a person like that? He is multifaceted, yet very outspoken and focused. I am very much looking forward to learning more about his family and where he came from"
.
One thing we do know is that the show does not shy away from portraying diverse characters and (some) familiar situations. One of the best things about "Ginny & Georgia" is that it does not shy away from serious conversations about race, identity, sexuality, and ability. Ginny is multi-racial in a mostly white town, so her frustration and inability to fit in is palpable. Her lesbian best friend Maxine (Sarah Weisglass), one of the only students in the school who has come out, is also shown early in the series struggling with dating. Meanwhile, Maxine's father (who is deaf) also makes an appearance, and he spends the entire series just vibing.
Gentry is outspoken about the show's dedication to inclusion; in an interview with W magazine (opens in new tab) she said, "When I was a kid, I never saw a biracial protagonist. There weren't many interracial couples or stories portrayed on TV or in movies, and it was only later that I realized I wished I had."
[11 [Meanwhile, Rebecca Black, who played Padma, told Brown Girl magazine (opens in new tab) It's impossible not to resonate with these characters because I am a woman of color living in a world built for white people."The cast also includes a number of women of color who have been cast in the film.
The cast also opened up about the inclusion of ASL in the show (opens in new tab). Weyglass learned the language for the show and said: "I literally had to learn a new language for this role. I literally had to learn a new language for this role. I love that about this show. I thought it was so wonderful."
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab), Fisher said, "I want to talk about Ginny and Georgia for a very long time." Lampert told OprahMag.com: (opens in new tab) "Season one really felt like season one. Season 1 really felt like Season 1.
In an interview with ELLE, (opens in new tab) Gentry said: 'I want to see Ginny get down and dirty. I want to see her morph a little bit into Georgia. I want to see her really dig in and show the mean side of her that I know. That would be really fun to explore. 0]
In early November 2021, she told Seventeen: "The stakes are obviously higher in season two than they were in season one. So I think fans are in for some great tension, a build-up to the climax, and some interesting character reveals. I can't say too much right now, but I can't wait for filming to resume. We're all ready to go. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in the cast."
Aaron Ashmore, of "Lock and Key" fame, has been cast as Austin's father Gil. iMDB reports that Gil will appear in all 10 episodes of season 2.
