I don't know about you, but I get a little cynical whenever I hear the word "multipurpose" used in reference to beauty products. With the exception of coconut oil and shea butter, I have never come across a product that can meet the unique needs of both my hair and skin. Anything rich enough to suit my curly hair usually causes breakouts, and anything light enough to suit my combination skin cannot effectively moisturize my hair. Plus, oils make my hair greasy, my curls heavy, and my skin like an oil slick. Worst timeline.
With the advent of Provence Beauty, my hard-line opposition to multi-use oils has been put to rest.
I recently took a weekend trip to Boston. Having just acquired Provence Beauty's rose-scented multi-purpose oil, I thought I'd give the brand's promise of creating an "effective lightweight moisturizer" that leaves the skin "hydrated and enriched without making it greasy."
What is most immediately noticeable and appealing about the product is the appearance of the oil itself: a small glass bottle decorated with rose, peony, and bergamot flowers that instantly feels luxurious when placed in a toiletry case. When traveling, especially when luggage is limited to a backpack, carrying this oil every morning and evening gave me a much-needed self-esteem boost on a weekend when I was forced to re-wear the same pair of jeans two days in a row.
The oil itself was lightweight and, as promised, absorbed into the skin within seconds of application. One of the reasons I don't often use raw shea butter is that it tends to leave a greasy residue on the skin, so this was a pleasant surprise. I also used this oil on my cuticles and as a hand and foot cream, and it didn't leave greasy handprints on everything I touched, nor did my oiled feet slip on the wood floors--win-win.
The ultimate test of this oil, however, was whether it would work on my hair. Since my curl type is between 2C and 3A and well above my waist, my biggest struggle was finding a product that would moisturize my strands and tame frizz without weighing down my curls, which are already heavy due to their length.
I was pleasantly surprised at how effective this product was. One dropperful was more than enough for my entire head of hair, and in no time at all, the frizz was tamed and the curl pattern was maintained. Personally, I would recommend parting your hair down the middle and using a quarter to half a dropper (depending on the length of your hair) on each half. Since it is still an oil, it needs to be used in moderation to prevent greasing, but when I used this method, I didn't notice any greasing at all, even after using it several times a day.
Perhaps the best thing about this product, however, is its wonderful scent. I love the smell of roses, but they can be a bit overpowering (or remind me of old ladies in church), and I am picky about rose scents. This oil strikes the perfect balance between heavy rose and light peony, so when my hair falls in front of my face or I lift my arm to smell my skin, I am pleasantly surprised by the soft, subtle floral scent. The perfume is understated, so I was able to wear the perfume throughout the weekend without the two scents clashing. It was like a sweet little personal secret, often at the most unexpected moments throughout the day.
This oil is only $13, so stock up this week on the Provence Beauty website. Never again will I have to waste precious luggage on the myriad of skin and hair care products I carry around regularly. Low maintenance living, here we come.
