How to Style Bangs: The Certified Hairstylist's Guide
The hair trend for 2022 is 70's style hairstyles. For example? A revival of curtain bangs. The shaggy, face-framing bangs have seemingly taken over (check out TikTok for proof), but knowing how to style curtain bangs is a must before committing to the look. But knowing how to style bangs is a must before committing to this style. But don't just take it from us; listen to the experts. [We asked IGK Haircare co-founder Franck Izquierdo (opens in new tab), celebrity stylist and R+Co Collective member Ashley Streicher, and stylist and resident curl expert April Kayganich, stylist and resident curl expert, spoke with us about curtain bangs. Here's how to determine if the hairstyle is right for you, how to style your bangs for maximum volume, and how to care for them.
The good news: Hair texture and face shape are not excluded from this trend. 'I love textured hair curtain bangs,' says Kayganich. 'They create a cute fringe around your face when you wear your hair up or down.'
If you're worried that your face shape isn't suited for bangs, think again. Curtain bangs "add dimension to round faces, but bangs can be created regardless of face shape. They just need to be styled to suit each one. If you have a strong jawline, you can soften it a bit," Izquierdo says.
For best results, Stracher recommends this style for those with some length. She says, "For longer hair, I recommend a curtain bang, which adds a soft '70s vibe to the look." Of course, hair is something to play with, so a shorter bob doesn't mean you can't chop it up.
Like any other cut, bangs need styling. The best thing you can do, says Kayganich, "is invest in the right products first and foremost." Having the right hot tools, round brushes, and styling creams for your hair type is key."
For textured hair, Kayganich uses a diffuser to add volume to the fringe. A little finger curling doesn't hurt either. If no heat is applied, use a gel or mousse to hydrate and enhance curls.
For very fine hair, Izquierdo says texturizers are key. He recommends rough-drying bangs to create a "rock 'n' roll" vibe. He adds, "For a classier look, use a small, round brush and dry hair with the brush forward, not down, to open up the frame and face."
After adding layers that frame the face, a little care is needed to maintain perfect length. 'The best way to maintain a good curtain bang is to keep it at the perfect, most effortless length.' Whether you use your own scissors or go to a salon for a trim, be prepared for some maintenance.
For curls, if the curl pattern is tight, you can wait a little longer before returning to the salon. "I recommend clients come in anywhere between four to eight weeks for bang trims to maintain shape and length," says Kayganich.
"Loose curls need to come in sooner because they really do show length faster than someone with coily hair."
The good news' it's easy to grow out curtain bangs. 'Growing them out is easy!' says Izquierdo. 'Pin your bangs, bring them behind your ears, or do a side part. When the bangs grow out, it's easy to blend them into long layers."
