Vanessa Hudgens' braided bun at the 2022 Met Gala is surprisingly easy to recreate
Vanessa Hudgens has given this year's gilded glamour dress code a gothic twist in honor of her big Met Gala in 2022. Her Renaissance-inspired Moschino gown may not be available in stores, but there is good news. Hear from hairstylist Danielle Priano, the mastermind behind Hudgens' intricate updo.
"Following the gilded gothic vibe of the dress, I felt the hair really should go back to the 1800s," Priano told Marie Claire exclusively. Priano and Hudgens thought a "tidy" braided bun would perfectly complement the "witchy" and "gothic" look. They "worked especially well with the dress's super-long train and gorgeous back detailing.
At first glance, the dense updo may look all sorts of confusing, but honestly, it's just a bunch of standard three-strand braids. This look is totally doable with natural hair, but according to Priano, adding clip-in extensions (she used Hidden Crown Seamless Clip-Ins (opens in new tab)) helps to increase the density.
When adding inches of extensions, Priano advises clipping the wefts, the technical term for the base of the extensions, in the direction of the ponytail. Then all the hair should be swept back into a ponytail. Layer on a layer of "Tips for a silky finish" SexyHair Not So Hard Up Medium Holding Gel (opens in a new tab).
Next, divide your hair into three sections and braid each section. attach a diamond string (or regular hair tinsel) to each of the three braids. Braid the three braids together. Then, brush back the hairline and wrap it into a ponytail. Finally, grab the entire hair and twist it into a bun.
"It's foggy outside today, so to make sure my hair stays in place all night, I sprayed it with SexyHair's Spray & Play Harder (opens in a new tab) to make it shiny," Priano says of her finishing touch. She also sprayed Hudgens with SexyHair's Weather Proof Moisture Resistant Spray (opens in new tab) before going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
