Why Spice Girls' Mel B and Emma Bunton Joined "The Circle"

Netflix's social media competition show "The Circle" is back for its fourth season, and there are some surprising celebrities among the contestants. Spice Girls members Melanie "Mel B" Brown and Emma Bunton (a.k.a. Scary Spice and Baby Spice) are this season's special contestants, living together in a stylish, camera-filled apartment during their appearance on the show and enjoying the full Circle experience.

The two iconic singers turn out to be huge fans of The Circle, and during their time on the show they show off some savvy social media and people skills. To learn more about their appearances on the show, read on.

The two members of the most famous girl group of all time are pretty well known by all ages, so if they appeared on the show as themselves, they would have had some major hurdles to overcome. (They probably would have been eliminated immediately, as was the Lance Bass impersonator in Season 2.) So instead of playing as themselves, they entered the season as a catfishing team.

Their character, chosen by the top influencers of the time, was a 28-year-old children's book author named Jared. Besides their age, occupation, and a few photos, the pop stars created their own profiles and character backstories, which led to the creation of a fun strategy.

"You have to think about the names of your books and how many you've written," Banton says when he enters the game. 'I'm pretty nervous about knowing everything about Jared. I have to write it all down, and I have to be smart about it."

In short, the two Spice Girls are not playing for money. Instead, they are on a catfishing mission in their limited time. If they succeed in fooling the majority of the players and the fake Jared is not found, the eventual winner will receive a $50,000 increase in the season's prize money (i.e., from $100,000 to $150,000).

Executive producer Toni Ireland said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Banton and Mel B were brought on board because they are fans of the show and "loved the challenge of creating characters."

She added, "The whole plan was that they wouldn't stay for the duration and they didn't want any chance of winning or anything like that. They were just special guests to play a little prank, and that's exactly what they did."

Spoilers ahead for season 4 of The Circle. Once Avatar joined the competition, the two quickly got into the act, forming alliances with some of the competitors and even flirting with Alyssa, a sex therapist. The two were vague about the details of Jared's work, saying that his book was about animals and poop and that "the kids love it."

Viewers also get some sweet moments of just Banton and Mel B living together in The Circle apartment, cooking for each other and taking care of Mel B's puppy Cookie. Ireland told EW that the two celebrities were treated just like the rest of the cast.

"It was a pleasure to have them on the show. 'Everything you see is exactly as it should be. They were really fun. They were so much fun, they were laughing together, and it was great to hear all the stories the girls were telling about the tour. I was a fan of the Spice Girls, and I was like, "I can't believe I'm watching this.""

Eventually, the show began dropping hints about celebrity catfish, including a 90s dance party where all the contestants, including Banton and Mel B, danced to "Wannabe," providing great fan service. It turns out that several of the contestants, especially marketing consultant Yu Lin and paranormal researcher Rachel, are big fans. So when the two reveal their true identities in a pre-filmed video introducing them as catfish, they get a first-rate response. (Eurin wants to wash their feet.)

After the big reveal, the players are told that the next night they will vote on which profile they think is really Banton and Mel B. Jared's sister claims to have been a big Spice Girls fan, but answers the obvious question wrong to keep the players guessing.

By the end of episode 4, two players have voted correctly and four have chosen other profiles as catfish, marking the beginning of the voting. These two players need only one more incorrect answer to win.
